New York City’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, is making headlines again — this time for his pre-politics rap days. A viral screenshot revealed that Mamdani, long before his mayoral victory, once emailed Passion of the Weiss, a prominent hip-hop and culture publication, seeking coverage for his track “Salaam.”
The email, dated March 27, 2017, paints a picture of a young artist eager to be heard.
“Hi Passion of the Weiss, I’m a rapper here in NYC and I’ve just released a new song titled Salaam,” Mamdani wrote.
The note continued with an explanation of the track’s theme: a reflection on “what it means to be Muslim here in America today—the fear, and the roots of that fear.” He concluded humbly, asking the publication to consider writing about the song in any way, and signed off with a SoundCloud link: “Much love and looking forward to hearing from you, Zohran.”
From SoundCloud Dreams to City Hall
The email was resurfaced on November 5 by Jeff Weiss, founder of Passion of the Weiss, who captioned the screenshot:
“Just digging through old emails on a regular Wednesday morning.”
Fans and journalists quickly shared the image, shocked to learn that NYC’s future mayor once cold-emailed an influential hip-hop outlet in hopes of gaining recognition for his music.
The song “Salaam” came at a time of heightened anxiety for Muslim Americans, marked by travel bans and rising hostility. Rather than a commercial push, Mamdani’s email framed the song as a personal reflection on identity and belonging, showcasing the values that would later define his political ethos.
A Rare Glimpse Into Mamdani’s Creative Past
For Passion of the Weiss, the email highlighted their longstanding role in supporting emerging artists, offering a nostalgic full-circle moment for Weiss and his team.
For Mamdani, it provides a unique insight into the early creativity, conviction, and vulnerability that now shape his leadership style. Before leading one of the world’s largest cities, he was a young artist seeking a platform, striving for someone to listen.
The message proves that Mamdani’s journey from SoundCloud rapper to New York City mayor was rooted in authenticity, artistry, and a desire to connect with people on a personal level.
Mamdani’s Cultural Resonance
The resurfaced email has sparked conversations online about the intersection of music, identity, and politics, highlighting a side of the mayor few knew. Fans noted the symbolism in his recent campaign celebrations, where Mamdani famously walked out to Ja Rule’s “New York”, bridging his love for music with his political rise.
As New Yorkers look ahead to January 1, 2026, when Zohran Mamdani officially takes office, the story serves as a reminder: before policies and platforms, he was an artist telling his story through music — a perspective that continues to influence his vision for the city.
