Cincinnati Reds rookie Tyler Callihan suffered a devastating injury Monday night after a violent collision in the outfield left him with a broken forearm.
The incident occurred in the third inning of the Reds’ matchup against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park. Callihan, 24, was chasing down a deep fly ball hit by Matt Olson when he made a full-speed diving attempt near the left field wall.
While Callihan initially appeared to make the catch, his momentum carried him into the wall, and the ball popped loose — as did his chance to continue playing, after suffering a fractured forearm on impact.
Scary Moment on the Field
Trainers rushed to Callihan’s side as he lay in pain, and the game was briefly halted as he was helped off the field. The Reds later confirmed the severity of the injury on social media, posting on X:
“We wish Tyler a speedy and full recovery.”
Adding Insult to Injury
The play got even worse for Cincinnati. After the ball came free, Olson took advantage of the chaos and scored a two-run, inside-the-park home run. The Braves eventually shut out the Reds, 4–0.
What’s Next for Callihan?
Callihan will be sidelined for several months as he recovers from the injury — a tough break for the young prospect trying to make a name for himself in the big leagues.
The Reds are set to face the Braves again in Game 2 of the series on Tuesday, but they’ll be without one of their most promising young talents.
Here’s hoping for a fast recovery for Tyler Callihan.
