Rob McElhenney, beloved star of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, is saying goodbye to a name that’s long confused fans, colleagues, and international business partners — and hello to a new era as Rob Mac.
The actor and global entrepreneur filed official documents in Los Angeles to legally shorten his full name, Robert McElhenney III, to the much simpler and sleeker Rob Mac.
While this might sound like a stage-name move, it’s far from cosmetic. Rob is going full throttle with this legal name change — a bold but calculated step that aligns with his expanding business portfolio and global brand.
Why the Name Change Now?
Rob first hinted at his intentions in a Variety interview back in May 2025, where he opened up about how his last name, “McElhenney,” often stumps people — especially outside the U.S.
“Nobody can say it. Nobody can spell it. And frankly, nobody remembers it,” he said in the interview. “Rob Mac just makes sense — for business, for branding, and for life.”
From Philly to Football and Beyond
While Rob is still most famous for playing Mac on It’s Always Sunny, he’s now known around the globe as the co-owner of Wrexham A.F.C., alongside Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds. The duo’s soccer club has earned worldwide fame thanks to their hit docuseries Welcome to Wrexham.
But Rob Mac’s ambitions go far beyond the pitch.
Through his company, More Better Industries, he’s investing in soccer clubs across South America — where, he says, people have an especially tough time pronouncing “McElhenney.”
“In Latin America, it’s just impossible. I might as well be called Rob Alphabet,” he joked.
How Does His Family Feel?
Not everyone in the McElhenney household is thrilled about the switch.
Rob’s wife, actress Kaitlin Olson, revealed that their kids — who still carry the McElhenney surname — aren’t exactly excited about dad’s legal rebrand.
“They’re like, ‘Wait, so you’re just leaving us with the hard name?’” Olson said with a laugh in the Variety interview.
Still, Rob insists that this isn’t about abandoning his identity — it’s about evolving with the times and streamlining his increasingly global business dealings.
A Global Brand Gets a Simpler Name
Rob already goes by “Rob Mac” in most business settings, so making it official is the logical next step. Now that the paperwork is signed, the actor-turned-businessman is embracing his streamlined identity across all fronts.
From sitcom icon to international sports mogul, Rob Mac is carving a legacy under a name that’s catchy, cool, and easy to remember.
