RUN-DMC, the pioneering hip-hop group from Hollis, Queens, is widely regarded as one of the most influential acts in music history. Comprised of Joseph “Rev. Run” Simmons, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, and the late Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell, the group’s unique sound and style were crucial in bringing rap music into the mainstream. With groundbreaking achievements, including being the first hip-hop group to earn both Gold and Platinum records, RUN-DMC forever altered the course of music history.

From the Streets to the Grammys: A Journey Through Time

In 1984, the trio released their self-titled debut album, making history as the first hip-hop group to earn a Gold record. Their next project, King of Rock (1985), became the first-ever Platinum rap album. Their 1986 album Raising Hell was the first multi-platinum rap album, solidifying their place in music history. Iconic songs like “It’s Like That,” “Sucker M.C.’s,” “Rock Box,” “My Adidas,” and the legendary “Walk This Way” continue to define the genre.

Their contributions were officially recognized in 2009 when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, cementing their legacy as pioneers of the genre. In 2024, RUN-DMC received another major accolade, being nominated for a Grammy for Best Music Film for the documentary Kings From Queens: The RUN-DMC Story. This nomination marks the group’s second Grammy nod, the first being in 1987.

Behind the Music: A Closer Look at Their Legacy

In an exclusive interview, Rev. Run and DMC discussed their journey and the process of reliving their storied career in the documentary. Rev. Run reflected on the chemistry that made the group so unique, saying, “I would have been nowhere without Daryl. Just pure, godly magic happened between me, Darryl, and J. It was destined.”

DMC elaborated on the trio’s role in shaping hip-hop, recalling their experience of bringing the genre to television. “We took the beat from the street and put it on TV. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, The Cold Crush Brothers, and Treacherous Three did it before us. We did it on TV,” he said, emphasizing the power of MTV in spreading hip-hop across the globe.

MTV and Hip-Hop’s Rise

DMC highlighted MTV’s pivotal role in hip-hop’s ascent, noting that Rock Box was the first rap video played on the channel in 1984. “MTV was very influential in the success of hip-hop. They helped spread it across the nation in everybody’s living room,” DMC said. This partnership helped globalize the genre, with RUN-DMC bringing hip-hop to audiences in Europe and beyond.

A Grammy Nomination: The Ultimate Recognition?

Although RUN-DMC is grateful for their Grammy nomination in 2024, Rev. Run expressed that they were content with their legacy regardless of any accolades. “We’re not worried about the props but we’re grateful to just be nominated. The nomination is enough for us,” he explained, reflecting on how the group predated the Grammys with their early music. DMC added humorously, recalling a meeting with Michael Jackson who said they should have won a Grammy for Best New Group in 1986.

Rev. Run’s Retirement and DMC’s Future Projects

While Rev. Run enjoys a quieter life in retirement, DMC remains actively involved in music and entertainment. He revealed plans to release new music and even launch his own comic book series in 2025. “I’m ready to drop a new single with Sebastian Bach on vocals, Travis Barker on drums, Mick Mars from Mötley Crüe on guitar, and Duff McKagan from Guns N’ Roses on bass,” DMC shared, teasing the new track titled “She Gets Me High.”

Looking Ahead: A Legacy That Keeps Evolving

RUN-DMC’s influence on hip-hop and the broader music landscape is undeniable. Their music transcended boundaries, from rap to rock, and their impact continues to inspire new generations of artists. As they step into 2024, their nomination for Kings From Queens proves that the group’s legacy is far from over. Whether they win a Grammy or not, RUN-DMC’s place in the history of music is already secured.
