A newly released bodycam video is sparking outrage nationwide after showing Jacksonville sheriff’s deputies violently striking William Anthony McNeil Jr., a 22-year-old Black man, during a controversial traffic stop earlier this year.

According to ABC News, the disturbing footage captures deputies repeatedly punching McNeil in the face as he sits in his car, questioning why he was being pulled over. The incident took place on February 19, 2025, and is now under intense public scrutiny.

???? What Happened During the Traffic Stop?

In the video, McNeil can be heard calmly asking officers why they pulled him over. When he refuses to exit his vehicle, one deputy is seen smashing his car window before delivering multiple blows to McNeil’s face.

At a news conference, Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters confirmed that Officer D. Bowers—the deputy who broke the window and struck McNeil—has been stripped of his law enforcement authority pending the outcome of an administrative review.

“These administrative reviews are ongoing, but the State Attorney’s Office has determined that none of the involved officers violated criminal law,” Waters said.

He stopped short of revealing whether any of the deputies involved have been suspended or placed on administrative leave.

???? Charges Against McNeil

According to court records, McNeil was arrested and charged with:

  • Resisting arrest without violence
  • Possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana with intent to use drug paraphernalia
  • Driving with a suspended license
  • Not wearing a seatbelt
  • Failing to use headlights in rain, fog, or smoke

He ultimately served two days in jail after being convicted of resisting arrest without violence and driving with a suspended license.

???? McNeil’s Lawyer: “This Officer Broke His Window and Punched Him”

McNeil’s attorney, Harry Daniels, strongly condemned the deputies’ actions and said his client plans to pursue legal action.

“This officer broke his window and just punched him in his face. Mr. McNeil suffered very significant injury,” Daniels said in a statement.

“We are planning to do everything we can to secure justice. We are seeking all options to ensure accountability.”

⚖️ Community Demands Accountability

The release of the bodycam footage has triggered widespread outrage and renewed calls for police accountability in Jacksonville and beyond. Civil rights activists and community leaders are demanding answers about how deputies handled the stop.

Many have pointed to the disturbing similarities between McNeil’s case and other high-profile instances of excessive force against Black motorists in recent years.

???? What’s Next?

As the administrative review into the deputies’ conduct continues, all eyes are on the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office to see whether further action will be taken.

Meanwhile, McNeil’s legal team is preparing for what could become a high-stakes lawsuit.

“We’re not backing down,” Daniels emphasized. “Justice will be served.”

???? What Do You Think?

Do you believe the deputies involved should face criminal charges? Was the force used against William McNeil Jr. justified?
