At the Los Angeles stop of her Grand National Tour, SZA gave fans a jaw-dropping moment when she brought out none other than Lizzo for a surprise performance. The event took place on Wednesday, May 21, at the sold-out SoFi Stadium, and fans were thrilled to see the two powerhouse performers on stage together.
SZA introduced her longtime friend with heartfelt words:
“Okay, so usually when I do very scary things, I have a tendency to bring my best friend with me. You may have seen her,” SZA said. “SoFi [Stadium] counts as one of those scary things, so I brought my best friend for energy and positivity.”
Moments later, Lizzo rose onto the stage from below, joining SZA to perform the remix of her 2022 hit “Special” from her album of the same name. The crowd erupted as the two women delivered a stunning live duet full of chemistry and emotion.
After the performance, Lizzo shared her excitement on Instagram, writing:
“BABY’S FIRST STADIUM PERFORMANCE— I love u @sza u r THEE DIVA!”
A Friendship Years in the Making
SZA and Lizzo have shared a strong bond since 2014, long before either reached international stardom. Their friendship has consistently shown up in interviews and livestreams, including a February Twitch stream where Lizzo praised SZA’s writing talent and revealed they once nearly formed a girl group—with an NSFW name.
“She writes the craziest, most insane s— that you’re thinking and feeling, but she just finds a way to say it, and she sings it so beautifully out the gate,” Lizzo said.
SZA has also been a vocal supporter of Lizzo during tough times. In June 2023, she took to social media to call out online fat-shaming and urged her followers to show real support:
“I be wondering where all the virtue signaling, well spoken s— talking, internet warriors are when someone genuine needs defending,” she wrote. “Where the f— do y’all be at for Lizzo?”
What’s Next?
As SZA continues her Grand National Tour alongside acts like Kendrick Lamar and Mustard, fans are hopeful for more magical on-stage surprises. One thing’s for sure: her moment with Lizzo is one for the books.
