The basketball world and Freeport community are reeling after Darcy Connolly-Brunner, mother of former WNBA and Arizona State standout Sophie Brunner, tragically lost her life in a head-on collision in Illinois. She was 61 years old.
According to the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), deputies responded to the fatal crash on Route 26 North in Freeport on Saturday. Preliminary reports suggest the incident occurred when a Nissan Altima, driven by 30-year-old Rolando Ico-Choc, crossed into the northbound lane and collided directly with Connolly-Brunner’s Ford Edge.
Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.
“As part of the investigation, deputies are examining whether alcohol impairment by Mr. Ico-Choc may have been a contributing factor in the crash,” SCSO said. “There is no indication that Ms. Connolly-Brunner was impaired.”
Toxicology testing will be conducted as part of the autopsy process, though results could take several weeks.
A Pillar of the Community
SCSO Sheriff Steven Stovall described Darcy as “more than a member of the community,” noting the profound impact her passing has had.
“Her passing has left a hole in the hearts of those who knew her, including myself, and members of my family,” he said.
Darcy was the mother of four children and a deeply respected figure in Freeport, known for her warmth, guidance, and involvement in her family’s lives.

Sophie Brunner: From Freeport Star to WNBA Pro
Darcy’s daughter, Sophie Brunner, carved out an illustrious basketball career that started at Aquin High School, where she led the team to state titles in both her junior and senior years. She is widely regarded as one of the greatest girls’ basketball players in the Freeport-Rockford region.
Standing 6’1”, Brunner went on to Arizona State University, earning First Team All-PAC-12 honors three times (2015-2017) and leading the Sun Devils to the NCAA Tournament each season.
After college, Brunner went undrafted in 2017 but signed with the Phoenix Mercury and the then-San Antonio Stars, later playing professionally in Italy. She also represented Team USA at the 2015 Pan-American Games, winning a silver medal.
In addition to her professional playing career, Sophie has contributed to the sport as a coach at Rockford Christian Schools, passing on her experience and passion for basketball to the next generation.
