The Ugandan entertainment industry is grieving the loss of Nicholas Mpiirwe Kamagala, widely known as DJ Messe Bontwe. A celebrated comedian, musician, and co-founder of the iconic Amarula Family comedy group, DJ Messe left an indelible mark on Uganda’s creative scene.
Messe passed away in the United States, where he had been living in search of better opportunities. His death has left a void among fans and the entertainment community, both in Uganda and abroad.

In 1999, DJ Messe joined forces with Amooti Omubalanguzi and the late Paddy Bitama to create Amarula Family, a comedy ensemble that redefined humor in Uganda. Before venturing into comedy, he showcased his musical talent as a member of the ‘Hommies Band’ (Abaana be Kka). His musical journey soared in 1995 with the hit song Bamusakata, a collaboration with the legendary Ragga Dee, cementing his reputation as a multi-talented entertainer.
Fellow Ugandans in the United States confirmed the heartbreaking news, which has sparked tributes across social media and beyond. Fans and peers remember DJ Messe as a pioneer whose contributions to comedy and music will remain unparalleled.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
