Whoopi Goldberg may be 69, but don’t expect the Hollywood legend to walk away from daytime TV anytime soon. The actress, comedian, and longtime co-host of ABC’s The View just revealed she has no plans to retire — and the reason is both funny and brutally honest.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight this week, the EGOT winner admitted she’s sticking around because she simply can’t afford not to.
“I gotta keep paying those bills, baby,” Whoopi said with a laugh, adding that if she had “married well,” things might look a little different.

Three Divorces Later …
Whoopi didn’t hold back about her personal life either, joking that her three divorces have definitely contributed to why she’s still hustling.
- Alvin Martin (1973–1979) – her first marriage and the father of her only daughter, Alex.
- David Claessen (1986–1988) – her second marriage, which ended just two years later.
- Lyle Trachtenberg (1994–1995) – her shortest marriage, lasting about a year.
These days, Whoopi proudly embraces the single life, often joking on The View that marriage just isn’t for her. And given the cost of divorce, we can’t really blame her.
Still Holding Court on The View
Whoopi has been a fixture on The View since 2007, now heading into her 18th season on the panel. The daytime juggernaut just launched its 29th season on Monday with Whoopi joined by Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Alyssa Farah Griffin, Sara Haines, and Ana Navarro.
While fans have speculated about when Whoopi might finally hang up her moderator seat, she made it clear she’s not going anywhere just yet.
Joy Behar Feels the Same Way
Interestingly, Whoopi’s not the only panelist with zero plans to retire.
Her co-host Joy Behar, who turns 82 in October, also told ET she’s sticking around. But unlike Whoopi, Joy’s reasoning was less about finances and more about passion.
“Creative people don’t retire, they don’t resign, they just keep going,” Joy explained.
It seems both women are perfectly content staying in front of the cameras — even if their motivations differ.

Whoopi’s Unstoppable Legacy
Beyond The View, Whoopi remains one of Hollywood’s most decorated stars. She’s one of the few entertainers to achieve EGOT status — winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award — and she’s starred in classics like Ghost, Sister Act, and The Color Purple.
Even with decades of success behind her, Whoopi clearly isn’t slowing down. Whether it’s cracking jokes, sparking debates, or dishing on hot topics, she’s proof that age (and three divorces) can’t stop a true legend from working — and winning.
