British rapper Central Cee has ignited a heated discussion online after suggesting that he played a major role in popularizing Nike Tech fleece tracksuits. During an interview with Web Culture on Wednesday (Jan. 29), the London-born artist confidently asserted his influence on the global fashion trend.

Central Cee’s Bold Claim

Known for his signature streetwear style, Central Cee often sports Nike Tech fleece jackets and pants. When asked about his fashion choices, the rapper stated:

“Me, I’m humble innit, but at the same time, I like to think that man put a lot of men onto the Nike Tech ting. You see da influence even in America and dat now, people be rocking their techs like they’re us.”

He continued, emphasizing the timing of the trend’s explosion: “It’s perfect timing as well really… you can’t rush it…”

To support his claim, the interview included clips of several prominent rappers, including Drake and NLE Choppa, rocking the popular fleece sets. The visual element seemingly aimed to reinforce Central Cee’s argument about his influence. However, social media users weren’t entirely convinced.

Backlash on Social Media

Following the interview, Central Cee’s comments quickly went viral, sparking a wave of reactions. Many online users, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), pushed back against the notion that the UK rapper had a hand in the widespread adoption of Nike Tech fleece in the U.S.

One user dismissed the claim, writing: “His entire lifestyle is based on Black American culture but he thinks we got dressing tips from HIM?! Lmao!” Another added, “Buddy wasn’t even old enough to make any money of his own when we started wearing Nike tech.”

Some critics accused the rapper—who is of English, Guyanese, and Chinese descent—of cultural appropriation, arguing that the style has long been a staple in Black American streetwear and hip-hop culture.

Supporters Weigh In

Despite the backlash, a small faction of social media users came to Central Cee’s defense. One X user argued that while the rapper himself may not have introduced Nike Tech to Americans, the UK’s fashion influence should not be underestimated:

“YES, Central Cee individually didn’t put AMERICANS on Nike Tech Fleeces, but the UK in general has been on that particular aesthetic and mold before NY/America. This is how marketing works—they made what was available in London also available in NY and across the country.”

Others pointed out that UK drill culture has significantly influenced global streetwear trends, particularly in recent years, and that Central Cee may have had an indirect impact through his music and visuals.

The Power of Fashion in Hip-Hop

Fashion has always been intertwined with hip-hop culture, with artists often serving as tastemakers for emerging trends. While Nike Tech fleece tracksuits have been a staple in both UK and US streetwear scenes for years, Central Cee’s claim highlights the ongoing debate about influence and cultural exchange between different hip-hop communities.

As the discourse continues, one thing is certain—whether Central Cee was a catalyst or not, Nike Tech fleece remains a go-to fashion choice for artists and fans alike. The rapper’s remarks have only amplified the conversation about the evolution of streetwear and its deep-rooted connections to music culture.
