Talk about a wild gamble gone wrong! A Royal Caribbean passenger is facing serious federal charges after allegedly jumping overboard in a daring attempt to dodge more than $16,000 in casino debt.
Authorities say Jey Gonzalez-Diaz made the desperate leap while U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents were conducting inspections at the end of a week-long Caribbean cruise.
Instead of sticking around to settle up, Gonzalez-Diaz reportedly chose the ocean as his exit strategy.
A Jet Ski Rescue — And a Failed Getaway
According to CBS News, Gonzalez-Diaz didn’t stay stranded in the water for long. A man on a Jet Ski swooped in to pull him out, and surveillance footage even captured the jaw-dropping moment.
It looked like something straight out of an action movie — but his escape didn’t last long.
Officials say Gonzalez-Diaz was later found inside the Puerto Rico Capitol Building, where he was carrying:
- $14,600 in cash
- Two cell phones
- Five different IDs
Not exactly the low profile you’d expect from someone on the run.
$16,710 in Casino Losses
Royal Caribbean told investigators that Gonzalez-Diaz racked up $16,710.24 in debt during the cruise, almost entirely from casino and gaming expenses.
Rather than face the financial fallout, feds say he tried to swim his way out of it. Instead, he’s now facing something much bigger than a collection call — federal charges.
What He’s Accused Of
Authorities are accusing Gonzalez-Diaz of attempting to avoid monetary reporting requirements when reentering the U.S. — a federal crime that carries serious consequences.
At this point, his overboard stunt has turned into a full-blown legal nightmare.
Cruise Life Gone Wrong
Cruises are often marketed as carefree vacations filled with buffets, shows, and late-night fun. But for Gonzalez-Diaz, the trip spiraled into a bizarre story of high stakes, high seas, and a failed getaway.
Passengers usually disembark with souvenirs and selfies … Gonzalez-Diaz may end up leaving this cruise with a prison sentence.
