Comedian and political commentator D.L. Hughley isn’t holding back when it comes to former MAGA loyalists who have now distanced themselves from Donald Trump.
Appearing on “TMZ Live“ Tuesday, Hughley made it clear — those who once stood by the 45th and 47th President of the United States but abandoned ship when things went south shouldn’t expect forgiveness.
Why He Calls Them ‘Selfish’
According to Hughley, the problem isn’t that some Trump supporters finally saw the light — it’s when they chose to.
“The only reason they turned against him is because he caused something bad to happen to them or someone close to them — not because he’s been doing bad things to other people all along,” Hughley said.
In his eyes, that makes these political turncoats self-serving, not principled.
Loyalty Above All Else in GOP Politics
Hughley brushed off the idea of forgiveness in politics altogether, saying the current Republican landscape is built entirely on loyalty — the ride-or-die kind.
He pointed out that many in Trump’s base had multiple opportunities to cut ties but chose not to. While he didn’t mince words, his bottom line was simple: If you stuck with him until it hurt you personally, don’t expect applause for leaving now.

The Missed Exit Ramps
While Hughley didn’t list all three specific moments during his TMZ Live appearance, he hinted that Trump’s past controversies — both during his first and second terms — offered more than enough chances for supporters to reconsider their allegiance before things got personal.
Jimmy Kimmel’s Perspective
The conversation came on the heels of comments from Jimmy Kimmel, who said Trump’s second term has been “way worse than expected.” While Kimmel admitted he holds no personal grudge against former Trump voters, he revealed he’s secured Italian citizenship as a backup plan — a not-so-subtle dig at the current political climate.
D.L. Hughley’s Ongoing Commentary
This isn’t new territory for Hughley. The outspoken comedian has been one of Trump’s most vocal critics in the entertainment world, regularly using his platforms — including The DL Hughley Show — to challenge political hypocrisy, racial injustice, and voter complacency.
Whether you agree with him or not, Hughley’s take is crystal clear: Jumping ship late doesn’t erase years of supporting the captain.
