Ice-T is pulling back the curtain on one of hip-hop’s most devastating losses: the death of his longtime friend Coolio.
In his new A&E documentary special Fame & Fentanyl, which premiered Monday, August 25, the rap legend and Law & Order: SVU star opened up about the epidemic that claimed the life of the “Gangsta’s Paradise” icon in 2022. Coolio died at 59 from an accidental overdose involving fentanyl, heroin, and methamphetamine.
“Coolio Didn’t Want to Die”
Ice-T described Coolio as full of life, saying drugs—not intent—took him too soon.
“Coolio was healthy. I know he didn’t want to die. He spoke freely about it, but that’s the thing,” Ice-T explained. “If you’re doing drugs recreationally, you’re not trying to take your own life. Recreation is a game, but this is no longer a game.”
For Ice-T, the tragedy underscored how fentanyl is rewriting the rules of recreational drug use, turning what some see as casual experimentation into a fatal risk.
The Epidemic Hits Close to Home
Coolio’s death wasn’t the only loss to shake Ice-T. He also pointed to actor Michael K. Williams (The Wire), who passed away in 2021 from a fentanyl-laced heroin overdose.
“When it hit Coolio and it hit Mike, that was the nail in the coffin. That’s when you go, ‘Yo, this sh*t is real.’ You know what I’m saying? It’s real,” Ice-T said.
The rapper admitted he and Coolio had even discussed working together before the tragedy:
“We had never worked together, but we had planned to. I hoped to work with him. When people die of fentanyl, it’s like they got hit by a car, like they got shot. This is a person who’s healthy, and tomorrow they’re outta there.”
Ice-T’s Personal Stand Against Drugs
While Ice-T revealed he’s never personally used drugs, the epidemic has touched his life in painful ways through family and friends.
“I don’t do drugs, but I never expected it. Everyone has someone in their life who has been affected by fentanyl,” he told Entertainment Weekly.
For him, that reality is why Fame & Fentanyl exists: to wake people up to the risks and highlight how far-reaching the crisis has become.
Fame & Fentanyl: A Hard-Hitting Special
The one-hour A&E special doesn’t just revisit celebrity overdoses—it spotlights how fentanyl has infiltrated communities across the U.S., cutting across lines of fame, wealth, and background. It aims to shed light on an epidemic that has taken tens of thousands of lives annually in recent years.
Premiering August 25 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, Fame & Fentanyl marks Ice-T’s latest effort to use his platform for more than entertainment. By framing the stories of stars like Coolio and Michael K. Williams alongside real families who’ve lost loved ones, the doc seeks to drive home the urgency of the crisis.
✨ Bottom Line: Ice-T says Coolio “didn’t want to die” and calls fentanyl a silent killer claiming lives without warning. His new documentary Fame & Fentanyl is a raw look at an epidemic reshaping Hollywood and America alike.
