Tyree Smith’s Conditional Release: Lawyer Defends Release Despite Backlash

The controversial conditional release of Tyree Smith, Connecticut’s notorious “killer cannibal,” has ignited fierce public backlash, but the man who’s advocating for Smith’s return to society, his lawyer Joseph Bruckmann, is confident the decision is sound. In an appearance on TMZ Live on Tuesday, Bruckmann defended the release, citing unanimous support from psychiatric experts at Connecticut’s Psychiatric Security Review Board, who concluded that Tyree is no longer a threat to the public.

Tyree Smith’s Gruesome Crime

Tyree Smith gained infamy back in 2011, when he was arrested for the brutal murder of Angel Gonzalez. In a chilling confession, Smith admitted to killing Gonzalez, then consuming parts of his brain and an eyeball. Despite the horrific nature of his crime, Smith was found not guilty by reason of insanity in 2012, and he was ordered to spend 60 years at a high-security psychiatric facility.

However, recent decisions by the Psychiatric Security Review Board have led to Smith’s conditional release, where he will be placed under 24/7 supervision at a community facility. The board’s unanimous agreement that Smith no longer poses a threat has led to significant controversy, especially given the violent and grotesque nature of his past actions.

Lawyer’s Defense of Release Decision

Bruckmann, who has been representing Smith, defended the board’s decision, expressing comfort in the psychiatric experts’ findings. He reassured the public that Smith’s daily medication regimen has been highly effective in managing his mental health condition, which has helped him reintegrate into a safer, more stable state.

The lawyer’s stance aims to calm fears about Smith’s potential to commit another violent act. He further explained that Smith’s transition from the high-security hospital to a supervised community facility was designed to mitigate risk while allowing for ongoing treatment and monitoring. As part of his release, Smith will continue to receive daily medication and psychiatric support, which is viewed as crucial to his rehabilitation process.

Public Concern and Lawyer’s Personal Stance

Despite these assurances, many are still concerned about Smith’s release due to the horrific nature of his past crime. The possibility that he might reoffend is a hotly debated topic, but Bruckmann insists that Smith has made significant strides in his recovery. When asked if he would be comfortable spending time with Smith in the real world, Bruckmann’s response is something viewers will need to tune in to TMZ Live to hear directly.
