Eddy Kenzo has reassured media houses across Uganda that the newly approved Copyright Management System and amendments to the copyright bill will be fair and affordable. Speaking to journalists, the prominent musician explained the details of the new system and how it will impact television and radio stations.
Affordable Annual Fees for Media Houses
Kenzo addressed concerns raised by some media houses, clarifying that they will be required to pay an annual fee for the music they use. He emphasized that the fees would be reasonable and manageable for all media outlets.
“They are going to be paying per year. They will, let’s say, tell you to pay Shs 200,000 for music, unless you’re just stingy,” Kenzo stated. He dismissed fears that artists were attempting to exploit the media, assuring the public that the fees would remain affordable for all.
Fair Royalty Distribution Based on Listenership
Kenzo further explained that the distribution of royalties will be based on listenership, ensuring that artists receive fair compensation for their work. He reassured the public that the system would ensure that royalties are distributed equitably, benefiting artists based on their music’s reach and popularity.
No Excessive Burden on Media Houses
To address ongoing concerns about the implementation of the new system, Kenzo stated that media houses would not be burdened with excessive payments. He reminded them that licensing for music usage has always existed, and previous fees were not exorbitant.
