The Star Wars galaxy is mourning the loss of one of its most memorable Imperial officers. Kenneth Colley, who played Admiral Piett, the commanding officer aboard Darth Vader’s ship, has passed away at the age of 87.
The British actor died peacefully at his Ashford, Kent home on Monday, surrounded by friends, after a brief battle with COVID-19 and pneumonia, his agent, Julian Owen, confirmed.

Colley’s portrayal of Admiral Piett in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983) cemented his place in the hearts of Star Wars fans worldwide. His character became iconic for his steady presence under the intimidating shadow of Darth Vader.
In 2012, Colley even reprised his role in the animated film Lego Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Out, delighting a new generation of fans.
