Randy Moss is officially back—and healthier than ever—after stepping away from ESPN last season to battle a rare and life-threatening cancer. The Hall of Fame wide receiver is now opening up about the hardest fight of his life and why returning to Sunday NFL Countdown means more to him than ever.
The former Minnesota Vikings star, known for electrifying the gridiron and later the TV airwaves, shared his journey in a heartfelt interview with TMZ Sports, describing his cancer fight as a “roller coaster” that tested his spirit but ultimately left him feeling “blessed.”
The Diagnosis That Changed Everything
In late 2024, Moss stunned fans when he revealed he had been diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive bile duct cancer. The disease forced him off the airwaves for months as he underwent a complex surgery and grueling treatment regimen.
“Man, it was tough,” Moss admitted. “Being away from my family, my crew, and the game I love—it took everything in me to push through.”
Back With the Crew
Now, after being cleared to return, Moss says he’s itching to reunite with his ESPN colleagues for Week 1.
“I look forward to it. I missed my crew—Greenie, Alex, Teddy,” he told TMZ Sports.
And in classic Randy fashion, he couldn’t resist taking a playful jab at co-host Rex Ryan.
“I really didn’t miss Rex Ryan much because he got on my nerves. So, Rex, if you’re hearing this, I am coming back—so scoot over!” he said with a laugh.
Love and Support From Around the World
During his battle, Moss says he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support—not just from family and friends, but also from fans, fellow athletes, and even celebrities like Montell Jordan.
“It was an emotional roller coaster, but seeing the love from ESPN, football fans, and just people in general—man, it kept me going,” he said.
The 47-year-old credited his faith, family, and medical team for guiding him through the darkest moments.
“God took me through it and brought me out of it back healthy. I’m a blessed man. I’ll leave it at that.”
From the Field to the Kitchen
While waiting for the NFL season to kick off, Moss has been staying busy with his new business venture: Crisppi’s Chicken, where he was spotted behind the counter, happily serving up plates to fans.
“I just can’t wait for Week 1 to get back with the crew and talk football!” he added.
Fans Celebrate Randy’s Return
Social media erupted with joy after Moss’s comeback announcement, with fans and colleagues showering him with love.
“The NFL isn’t the same without Randy’s energy on Sundays. Welcome back, GOAT!” one fan wrote.
