Adrian Peterson Busted for DWI After Vikings Draft Party, Blew Twice the Legal Limit

NFL legend Adrian Peterson found himself in serious legal trouble Thursday night after he was arrested and booked for driving while intoxicated (DWI) in Minnesota—just hours after appearing as a guest at the Minnesota Vikings’ Draft Day celebration.

According to TMZ Sports, the former NFL MVP and Vikings icon was pulled over around 3:20 AM in Hennepin County, driving an Audi Q5 at 83 MPH in a 55 zone. The Minnesota State Patrol officer who stopped Peterson reportedly observed signs of impairment and requested a field sobriety test.

Peterson, now 40 years old, submitted to a breathalyzer test on the scene, where he blew a .14 blood alcohol content (BAC)—well above Minnesota’s legal limit of .08.

    Mug Shot and Jail Booking

Following the stop, Peterson was arrested and taken to the Hennepin County Jail, where he was booked on a fourth-degree DWI charge. He was later released, but not before posing for a mug shot, now circulating online and grabbing national attention.

The arrest is a stark contrast to the evening Peterson had just hours earlier, when he was welcomed by thousands of fans at the Vikings’ Draft Day extravaganza at U.S. Bank Stadium. Peterson was a featured guest at the high-energy event, which was intended to celebrate the future of the franchise he helped define during his legendary 10-season tenure with the team.

    Vikings Yet to Comment

As of now, the Minnesota Vikings have not issued a public statement regarding Peterson’s arrest. The team has previously celebrated Peterson’s accomplishments—he’s considered one of the greatest running backs in NFL history and is widely expected to be a future Hall of Famer.

Peterson has not played in the league since the 2021 season, but remains a beloved figure in Minnesota for his record-breaking performances and leadership on the field. However, this latest incident could cast a shadow over his legacy, at least in the short term.

    Previous Legal Issues

This is not Peterson’s first run-in with the law. In 2014, he was indicted in Texas on child abuse charges related to using a switch to discipline his 4-year-old son. He ultimately pleaded no contest to misdemeanor reckless assault, receiving probation, a fine, and community service.

Peterson also made headlines in 2022, when he was detained at Los Angeles International Airport after an alleged domestic violence incident involving his wife. The case was later dropped after she declined to press charges.

    Potential Legal Consequences

In Minnesota, a 4th-degree DWI is a misdemeanor charge that typically results from a first-time offense with no aggravating factors other than a BAC over the legal limit. Still, it can carry consequences such as:

    • Fines of up to $1,000
    • Up to 90 days in jail
    • Driver’s license suspension
    • Possible court-mandated alcohol education programs

It’s unclear at this point whether Peterson will face additional penalties beyond the standard DWI charge.

A Fall from a Celebratory Moment

The timing of the arrest adds an extra layer of irony—and disappointment—for fans. Thursday was meant to be a celebratory return to the spotlight for Peterson, who was honored at a high-profile Vikings event. Instead, the night ended in controversy.

Peterson has not yet made a public statement about the incident, nor have his representatives responded to media inquiries.

    What’s Next for Peterson?

Whether this arrest affects Peterson’s post-NFL career remains to be seen. He’s made multiple attempts to stay connected to the league and the sport, including media appearances, community events, and even expressing interest in coaching or mentoring younger athletes.

However, this DWI arrest will likely reignite discussions about celebrity accountability, public safety, and how even beloved figures must be held to legal and moral standards.
