Jacob Couch, a 32-year-old father from Alabama, passed away Thursday night after nearly two weeks on life support following a shocking and violent attack at a Tucson, Arizona, bus stop. Police confirmed the heartbreaking news, stating that Jacob succumbed to pneumonia and heart failure after being viciously attacked by a man wielding a hatchet on April 5.
A Family’s Heartbreak
Jacob’s wife, Kristen Couch, paid tribute to her late husband by sharing emotional throwback photos on Facebook, expressing her devastation over the loss. She reflected on their 11 years together and how they had hoped for many more years to come. The couple had been traveling back to their home in Arab, Alabama, after spending time in Los Angeles to cope with the stillbirth of their son in 2024. The attack occurred as they were returning home from their time in California, where they had hoped to heal from their tragic loss.
The Attack and Arrest
Police say the assault was random and brutal. Jacob was sitting at a bus stop with Kristen, preparing to return home, when 41-year-old Daniel Michael attacked him with a hatchet. The suspect, who is now facing first-degree murder charges, was arrested shortly after the attack. Originally charged with aggravated assault and causing serious injury, the charges have been upgraded following Jacob’s death. Daniel Michael remains in custody at the Pima County Adult Detention Center, with a $2 million bond.
A Devastating Loss
Jacob’s passing has left his family devastated, including his wife and their two daughters from previous relationships. Kristen told KGUN 9 News that the couple had hoped their time in Los Angeles would help them heal, but their grief lingered. “It didn’t work,” she said, explaining why they had decided to return to Alabama before the tragic attack.
Jacob Couch was 32 years old. His family, friends, and loved ones are mourning his untimely death and the violence that led to it.
