BET Promises Safety and Star Power Amid Citywide Unrest

The 2025 BET Awards may be a celebration of Black excellence, but this year, it’s going down right in the middle of a city on fire—literally.

With downtown Los Angeles rocked by some of the most intense ICE-related protests the city has ever seen, tensions are sky-high as the red carpet rolls out for one of entertainment’s biggest nights. Cars have been torched, dozens arrested, and the National Guard placed on standby… but despite the chaos, the BET Awards are still happening tonight at 8 PM ET/PT, as scheduled.

BET Speaks Out: “The Show Must Go On”

In an exclusive statement to TMZ Hip Hop, a rep for BET addressed growing concerns over the safety of guests, artists, and crew amidst the unrest:

“We are committed to ensuring the safety of our guests and staff for culture’s biggest night. We are actively monitoring the situation and working closely with LAPD.”

The message is clear: the show will go on—but under serious police supervision.

Downtown LA Is a War Zone

The protests ignited after federal ICE raids reportedly swept through multiple Los Angeles neighborhoods, triggering mass demonstrations, sit-ins, and violent confrontations with police.

Several Waymo self-driving cars were set ablaze, video footage of clashes between protestors and police has gone viral, and the streets surrounding Microsoft Theater—where the awards are being held—have been flooded with activists and heavily armed law enforcement.

President Donald Trump, who’s running again in 2024, has already issued a statement warning California Governor Gavin Newsom to “get control of the situation” or face federal intervention. As of this morning, over 40 people have been detained, and the LAPD is operating at tactical alert level.

Security Ramps Up for Star-Studded Night

Despite the chaos outside, it’s business as usual on the inside—sort of.

Behind the velvet ropes and designer fits, a wall of security measures has been activated. LAPD officers are on site in large numbers, drone surveillance has been deployed, and bomb-sniffing dogs were spotted during red carpet setup.

Insiders say security around performers and VIPs has doubled, with talent teams being given detailed exit strategies and emergency procedures.

And they’re protecting serious star power. Confirmed performers include:

  • Snoop Dogg
  • Jamie Foxx
  • Lil Wayne
  • GloRilla
  • Teyana Taylor
  • Playboi Carti
  • Leon Thomas
  • Kirk Franklin

That lineup guarantees a legendary night—if things stay calm enough to finish it.

A Historic Night—For All the Right or Wrong Reasons?

The 2025 BET Awards were already poised to be iconic with its all-star lineup, tributes, and surprises—but now, it’s caught in the crossfire of a nationwide debate on immigration and state power.

This year’s ceremony is more than just glitz and trophies—it’s unfolding at the intersection of culture and crisis.

How it all plays out tonight could redefine what it means for art to meet activism—live, under the glare of national headlines and global streaming.
