More than two decades after I Still Know What You Did Last Summer terrified audiences, Brandy is looking back—and revealing some jaw-dropping behind-the-scenes tea.

In a candid interview with Entertainment Tonight, the R&B icon opened up about her experience filming the 1998 slasher sequel, her desire to break horror film stereotypes, and the real reason she wanted to join the cast.

And spoiler: she didn’t just sign on for the thrill—she had a few conditions of her own.

???? “I Didn’t Have the Best Experience”

While the movie was a box office hit and marked Brandy’s first major feature film, the experience wasn’t all red carpets and scream queens.

“I didn’t have the best experience because of the weather and all of that,” Brandy recalled.

The film was shot across Los Angeles and Jalisco, Mexico, chosen to double as a tropical Bahamian resort. But the heat, humidity, and jungle conditions weren’t what Brandy had in mind.

“We were in a space where… it was just bugs and this and that,” she said. “I’m like, ‘We gotta film this somewhere else.’”

????️ Her Character’s Fate? Written in the Contract

One of the most iconic parts of Brandy’s role as Karla Wilson, the fun-loving best friend of Julie James (played by Jennifer Love Hewitt), is that—unlike so many horror movie sidekicks—she actually survives.

And that wasn’t by accident.

“That was in the contract,” Brandy admitted.
“Black people don’t last in horror films, so I had to put that in the contract.”

Yes, you read that right.

Brandy made horror history by demanding her character defy the genre’s most overused and problematic trope—that Black characters rarely make it to the end credits.

???? Why She Really Took the Role

So what drew the R&B princess to a bloody thriller filled with killers and chaos? Believe it or not, it wasn’t the script, the cast, or the tropical backdrop.

It was the language.

“The reason why I wanted to do I Still Know What You Did Last Summer is because I wanted to curse in a film,” she said with a laugh.

After years of playing squeaky-clean roles on TV, including the beloved Moesha, Brandy was ready to show a different side of herself—one with a little more edge.

???? Brandy & Monica Are Back—Together at Last!

While fans are celebrating Brandy’s horror flashbacks, she’s also got major news on the music front.

For the first time ever, Brandy and Monica will hit the road on a co-headlining arena tour—more than 25 years after their iconic duet “The Boy Is Mine” ruled the Billboard Hot 100 for 13 weeks straight.

Produced by Black Promoters Collective, the 24-city tour will feature powerhouse support from:

  • Kelly Rowland
  • Muni Long
  • Jamal Roberts (rising R&B star to watch)

This isn’t just nostalgia—it’s a celebration of two women who defined an era and still dominate the stage.

????️ Brandy’s Acting Legacy Lives On

While her horror debut may not have been the dream experience, Brandy’s performance became a standout moment in late-‘90s pop culture. Karla Wilson’s survival was groundbreaking, and her presence in the film helped diversify a genre that still struggles with representation today.

With more film and TV projects rumored for the future—and this epic tour lined up—Brandy is proving she’s still a force, whether she’s singing, acting, or rewriting the rules of horror.

????️ What’s Your Favorite Brandy Moment?

From Moesha to Cinderella to I Still Know What You Did Last Summer—Brandy has been in the spotlight for decades, and she’s still evolving.

What’s your favorite Brandy memory? Will you be seeing her on tour? Sound off below and stay locked to The Pop Radar (TPR) for more music and movie exclusives! ????????????
