Tragedy has struck the Chicago community as DeAngelo Miles — a beloved high school football captain — was fatally shot just days after graduating from Hansberry College Prep.
According to the Chicago Police Department, the incident occurred early Sunday morning around 3 a.m. near the 11900 block of South Wallace Street. Officers responded to reports of gunfire and discovered a teenage male unresponsive in a nearby alley with a gunshot wound to the head.
“He was pronounced on scene,” said a CPD spokesperson. “There is no one in custody at this time, and Area Two Detectives are actively investigating.”
A Promising Future Cut Short
DeAngelo, a standout student-athlete and team captain of Hansberry College Prep’s football team, had just celebrated his high school graduation on Thursday. Family members told reporters that he had been attending an after-prom party with friends when the tragic shooting took place.
Investigators believe the incident may have been connected to a possible robbery gone wrong, though details remain under investigation.

Hansberry College Prep confirmed the devastating news in a heartfelt statement, mourning the loss of one of its brightest students.
“Our hearts are heavy as we grieve his passing,” said Principal Kashawndra Wilson. “We extend our deepest sympathies and offer our thoughts and prayers to his family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic loss.”
Wilson added that DeAngelo had aspirations of joining the United States Navy, showing his commitment to leadership and service beyond the football field.

In honor of DeAngelo’s life and legacy, the school plans to hold a memorial service and balloon release, giving students, staff, and family a chance to gather and remember the impact he had on their lives.
