Renowned Ugandan stand-up comedian and singer, Obedi Lubega, popularly known as Reign, has lauded fellow creatives and public figures for stepping up and vying for various political offices across the country.
Reign made these remarks upon returning from Mecca, where he had been on a pilgrimage. Speaking shortly after landing at Entebbe International Airport, he expressed his admiration for entertainers who have taken bold steps toward active political engagement.
Reign Applauds Fellow Artists Taking Political Office
Reign specifically praised artists and creatives such as:
- Big Eye Starboss
- Zambali Mukasa
- Khalifah AgaNaga (who recently secured the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) ticket to contest in the upcoming Kawempe-North MP by-election on March 13, 2025).
The comedian commended their courage and determination in stepping into the political arena, which was once seen as off-limits for entertainers.
“I want to applaud every artist and creative that showed interest and the desire to engage themselves in active politics. Thank you for that zeal and taking heart,” Reign stated.
He further noted that times have changed, and creatives are now actively shaping the political future of Uganda.
“Back then, they used to say that artists shunned engaging themselves in politics, but now we have started showing a very positive sign.”
A New Wave of Creatives in Ugandan Politics
The recent surge of artists and media personalities entering politics is a significant shift in Uganda’s political landscape. Over the years, entertainers have used their platforms to influence public opinion, but many shied away from running for office.
However, the trend is changing, with more musicians, comedians, and media personalities joining the race for parliamentary and local government seats.
Some of the most notable entertainers who have ventured into politics include:
- Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) – The musician-turned-politician who leads the National Unity Platform (NUP) and previously contested for the Ugandan presidency in 2021.
- Khalifah AgaNaga – Running for Kawempe-North MP under the FDC party.
- Big Eye Starboss – Who has also expressed political ambitions.
- Zambali Mukasa – Another entertainer with political aspirations.
Reign believes that this new wave of creatives entering politics signifies a strong commitment to change and national development.
“This is a very clear signal that Ugandans are focused on having a better and brighter future.”
Reign Confirms His Own Political Ambitions
In addition to praising his colleagues, Reign confirmed that he himself is also venturing into politics, as he aspires to contest for the position of Rubaga-South MP.
This revelation further cements the idea that Ugandan entertainers are ready to influence governance and policymaking beyond just using their platforms for advocacy.
While Reign has not yet confirmed which political party he will be running under, his announcement is expected to stir conversations among both his fans and political observers.
Can Entertainers Succeed in Ugandan Politics?
The involvement of musicians, comedians, and other creatives in Ugandan politics has been met with mixed reactions. Some critics argue that entertainers may lack the necessary experience to serve in leadership roles.
However, supporters argue that entertainers have a unique connection with the masses, making them effective representatives of the people.
The success of Bobi Wine in Ugandan politics has inspired many to believe that entertainers can become effective leaders. As a result, more public figures are transitioning from entertainment to governance, hoping to bring fresh ideas and challenge traditional political structures.
Final Thoughts: A New Era of Political Leadership?
With the 2025 by-elections approaching and the 2026 general elections on the horizon, the participation of artists, comedians, and creatives in Ugandan politics will be closely watched.
- Will Khalifah AgaNaga secure the Kawempe-North MP seat?
- Will Big Eye and Zambali Mukasa continue their political journeys?
- Will Reign’s bid for Rubaga-South MP gain momentum?
As Ugandan entertainers step onto the political stage, one thing is clear—politics is no longer reserved for traditional politicians alone. The influence of music, comedy, and the creative industry is now shaping the country’s leadership landscape.
Only time will tell if this new generation of artist-politicians can transform Ugandan governance or if they will face the same political challenges as their predecessors.
