Danielle Spencer, best known for her role as Dee Thomas on the iconic ’70s sitcom What’s Happening!!, has died at the age of 60, leaving fans and loved ones heartbroken.
Her mother, Cheryl Pelt, confirmed to TMZ that Danielle passed on Monday, August 11, 2025, after a long battle with health issues including gastric cancer and cardiac arrest.
Final Days in the Hospital
Danielle spent her last days in a Virginia hospital, receiving care through tubes for nutrition and medication. According to her mother, she was hospitalized on August 1 after a urinary tract infection turned septic, making it impossible for her to eat solid food.
“She was alert and talking while we were with her,” Cheryl said.
Complications piled up as Danielle also suffered from pneumonia in both lungs, weight loss, and the ongoing effects of her cancer. On Sunday, she experienced a code blue, becoming unresponsive. Doctors managed to restore her pulse and moved her to the ICU, but her heart ultimately could not recover.
From Child Star to Veterinarian
After Danielle’s acting career slowed, she pursued her lifelong dream of working with animals. She spent over two decades as a veterinarian in Los Angeles, a career she loved deeply.
“Even after Hollywood, Danielle lived her dream taking care of animals,” Cheryl shared.
Danielle had moved back to live with her mother in Virginia after falling ill in 2013, continuing to receive care and support from family.
A Life Marked by Strength and Love
Danielle endured significant hardships, including a serious car accident that claimed her stepfather, Tim Pelt, and left her with lasting health challenges. Despite this, she maintained her positivity and love for her family.
Her brother, jazz musician Jeremy Pelt, told TMZ:
“Danielle had a tremendous amount of love and care for those she loved — her nieces and nephews — and she remained positive in her darkest moments.”
