Fresh off the success of HBO’s The Penguin, DC Studios has officially greenlit a Clayface movie, centered on the iconic Batman villain. The film, scripted by acclaimed Doctor Sleep director Mike Flanagan, is slated to hit theaters on September 11, 2026, according to Warner Bros.

While plot details remain tightly under wraps, the project marks an exciting move for DC as it continues expanding its universe with darker, genre-blending narratives. Filming is expected to begin early next year, with production being led by Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris through their company, 6th & Idaho Productions.

Mike Flanagan’s Horror-Inspired Vision

Flanagan, known for his mastery of horror in films like The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep, first pitched the Clayface project to DC Studios in 2023. In a 2021 tweet, he expressed his interest in tackling Clayface as a standalone “horror/thriller/tragedy”, a concept that aligns perfectly with the villain’s eerie, shapeshifting abilities.

Despite penning the script, Flanagan’s busy schedule—including directing Universal’s The Exorcist reboot and developing a Carrie adaptation for Amazon—has left DC on the hunt for a director. Sources suggest an announcement about the film’s director is imminent.

Who Is Clayface? A History of the Iconic Batman Villain

Clayface has a storied history in DC Comics, first appearing in 1940 as Basil Karlo, a washed-up actor turned criminal who dons a clay mask to exact revenge. The character later evolved in 1961 with shapeshifting abilities, transforming Clayface into a tragic figure capable of both menace and pathos.

Over the years, Clayface has appeared in multiple live-action and animated adaptations:

  • Ron Perlman voiced the villain in Batman: The Animated Series (1990s).
  • Brian McManamon brought him to life in Fox’s Gotham.
  • Alan Tudyk currently voices Clayface in Max’s hit animated comedy Harley Quinn.

With his complex backstory and ability to morph into anyone or anything, Clayface provides a unique canvas for a horror-centric take in the DC Universe.

DC’s New Storytelling Era Under Gunn and Safran

The Clayface greenlight is a testament to DC Studios co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran embracing diverse tones and storytelling styles within the DC Universe. Gunn recently shared his vision for DC during an interview with Variety, saying:

“We can make complete family fare. We can make something that’s for general audiences, like ‘Superman.’ We can make something that’s violent and sexual… It’s about creating a world in which we can tell the story about one type of character in different genres.”

This approach opens the door for a darker, horror-driven Clayface story while staying rooted in the expansive Batman mythos.

What’s Next for DC Fans?

As The Penguin series paves the way for Matt Reeves’ expanding Gotham universe, Clayface promises to delve deeper into the psychological and horrific elements of DC’s rogues’ gallery. Fans eager to see one of Batman’s most unsettling villains reimagined can mark their calendars for September 2026.

With Mike Flanagan’s chilling vision and DC’s new creative freedom, Clayface has the potential to be a game-changing addition to superhero cinema.
