It’s official—Black athletic excellence is taking over Walt Disney World this December! For the first time ever, elite Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) will square off in the inaugural HBCU Hoops Invitational, set for December 4–7 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida.
This history-making tournament isn’t just a competition—it’s a cultural celebration of HBCU pride, talent, and tradition on one of the world’s biggest stages.
Who’s Playing?
The event will showcase eight programs across men’s and women’s brackets:
🏀 Men’s Bracket:
- Florida A&M University (FAMU)
- Tuskegee University
- Florida Memorial University
- Barber-Scotia College
🏀 Women’s Bracket:
- Bethune-Cookman University
- Hampton University
- Edward Waters University
- Cheyney University
All games will be played in a single-elimination format, with teams battling for the very first HBCU Hoops Invitational titles.
More Than Basketball
While fans can expect high-energy competition and unforgettable highlights, organizers are making it clear: this is bigger than the game.
“The HBCU Hoops Invitational is far more than a basketball tournament—it’s a powerful celebration of heritage, excellence, and the limitless future of HBCU athletics,’’ said Haywoode Workman, HBCU Hoops Global VP and former NBA player turned referee.
Workman emphasized that the event will help build a lasting legacy, creating pathways for academic success, career readiness, and financial opportunity for HBCU scholar-athletes.
Disney’s Big Holiday Sports Lineup
The HBCU Hoops Invitational joins an already packed calendar at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, which will also host:
- WBCA Showcase (Nov. 20–23)
- ESPN Events Invitational (Nov. 24–28, during Thanksgiving week)
Disney officials say the addition of the HBCU tournament elevates the park’s sports offerings even further.
“We are excited about the opportunities to bring thrilling, family-friendly events to ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex,” said Jorge Senior, Disney’s Director of Sport Planning and Development. “If you’re a college basketball fan, there’s no better place to be during the holidays than at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.”
Why It Matters
HBCUs have long been the heartbeat of Black culture, community, and sports, producing legendary athletes who shaped both college and professional basketball. Hosting an HBCU-only tournament at Disney—one of the world’s most recognizable entertainment hubs—spotlights the continued growth and influence of these institutions.
For players, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase their skills on a national stage. For fans, it’s a chance to celebrate basketball, culture, and history all in one arena.
