NBA legend Dwyane Wade has opened up about a life-changing health scare that led to the discovery of cancer. What started as a routine check-up quickly turned into an emotional journey that tested his resilience.
Early Symptoms and Shocking Diagnosis
In a recent interview, the retired basketball star revealed that after turning 40, he scheduled a medical check-up despite having no major symptoms. However, he did mention to his doctor some changes while urinating and occasional stomach pain.
“I talked about just having a slow stream, like sometimes when I would go to the bathroom, my urine would come out a little slow,” Wade shared. “I had some cramps, some pain in my stomach that I didn’t understand. But I didn’t think much of it.”
Concerned, his doctors recommended an MRI scan, which led to an unexpected discovery—a cancerous mass on his kidney.
Facing the Reality of Cancer
“She [the doctor] expressed to me that it was very early, but they thought they saw something on my kidneys. I didn’t go in for my kidneys. I went in to check my stomach and prostate,” Wade explained.
Doctors informed Wade that if the mass was left untreated, it could spread to his lungs and brain within the next five to ten years. At that moment, he realized the severity of the situation.
Successful Surgery and Recovery
Following his diagnosis, Wade underwent surgery to remove 40% of his kidney. Today, he is officially cancer-free.
His wife, Gabrielle Union, praised his strength, revealing that Wade chose to keep the diagnosis and surgery private for over a year.
“He’s cancer-free now. He was smart to delay talking about it to give us all time to make peace with it. He’s brave. He’s doing well, and we’re proud of him,” Union shared.
A Message of Awareness and Strength
Wade’s experience serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of regular check-ups and early detection. Despite his battle, the basketball icon remains grateful and optimistic about the future.
