On Sunday, February 2, the Sheraton Kampala Hotel played host to the Eco Peace Concert at the Rwenzori Ballroom, a spectacular evening headlined by internationally acclaimed cellist Diego Carneiro.

The event, a vibrant fusion of music, fashion, and inspiring speeches, was designed to support environmental conservation and peace-building initiatives, showcasing the transformative power of music as a unifying force for change.

Sustainable Fashion Takes Center Stage

One of the evening’s standout moments was a sustainable fashion showcase by Kenyan designer Catherine Sawe, founder of Sawe Creations, which operates in Kamwokya, Kampala.

“We pride ourselves on being a sustainable brand,” Sawe remarked, highlighting that her company has previously designed outfits for Sheraton staff and various events.

The show featured organic and eco-friendly fabrics, with Sawe emphasizing that Ugandan cotton was among the locally sourced materials used for the designs.

Reflecting on the night, she shared:

“It’s been a great event. I’ve been able to interact with people and network. This experience has broadened my understanding of sustainable fashion.”

Sheraton Kampala’s Commitment to Sustainability

Sheraton Kampala Hotel’s General Manager, Jean Philippe Bittencourt, reaffirmed the hotel’s dedication to sustainability and social impact, emphasizing that Sheraton is deeply invested in conservation and community development.

“Sheraton treasures sustainability, and we have several programs focused on conservation and social initiatives,” he stated.

As part of these efforts, a portion of the concert’s proceeds was donated to Namunye Foundation, a nonprofit organisation that empowers underprivileged children in slum communities through performing arts.

“These are the kinds of communities that need help, so we are supporting them,” Bittencourt added.

Diego Carneiro’s Mission for Sustainable Music

Diego Carneiro, who first performed in Uganda in 2024 at the National Theatre, has been actively involved in global conservation efforts through music. His collaborations include partnerships with Rotary International and other organisations promoting sustainability.

During his visit to Uganda last year, the Brazilian cellist launched a sustainable music initiative, aiming to teach music using instruments crafted from recycled trash and garbage. This innovative approach not only promotes environmental consciousness but also makes music education accessible to marginalized communities.

A Night of Musical Brilliance

The Eco Peace Concert featured a diverse ensemble of talented musicians, each adding a unique cultural flavor to the night’s performances. The lineup included:

🎻 Diego Carneiro – Cello (Lead Performer)
🎹 Benon Kigozi – Piano
🎻 Katharina Schauer – Violin
🎤 Suzan Kerunen – Vocals
🎼 Kikule Fredrick – Tube Fiddle (Endigidi)
🎶 Katima Hamza – Flute (Omulele)
🥁 Bernard Sserwanga, Ssekate Ivan & George Birenge – Percussion

The rich blend of classical, traditional, and contemporary sounds created an immersive experience, with the audience deeply moved by the harmonious blend of global and indigenous music.

Final Thoughts

The Eco Peace Concert was more than just an evening of spectacular performances—it was a powerful statement on sustainability, culture, and the role of music in driving change.

As Uganda continues to embrace eco-conscious initiatives, events like these set the tone for a future where music, fashion, and activism merge to create a positive social impact.
