In a revealing interview with PEOPLE, rap legend Eminem detailed the harrowing overdose he suffered in 2007 — a moment that forced him to confront his spiraling addiction and commit to sobriety.
The Stan rapper describes waking up in a hospital bed, unable to move and confused about what had happened. The incident came after years trapped in a “vicious cycle” of depression and dependence on pills.
“After the overdose, I came home going, ‘Yo, bro, I need something… I’m going to die if I don’t do something,’” Eminem said.
“I didn’t know what the f— happened. It seemed like I fell asleep, and I woke up with tubes in me and s—. I wanted to get up. I couldn’t move.”
A New Chapter Begins With Relapse
Following the overdose, Eminem channeled his experiences into his 2009 album Relapse, marking the start of his recovery journey. Though the album had a lukewarm reception, it signaled a turning point.
“You’ve gotta do something different,” he said. “Why don’t you try embracing sobriety?”
Treating Sobriety Like a Superpower
Today, Eminem proudly views sobriety as one of his greatest strengths.
“I realized I’m not embarrassed anymore about it, and I started treating sobriety like a superpower. I was proud of the fact that I could quit.”
