Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein is reportedly in failing health behind bars at New York City’s notorious Rikers Island, where he’s been serving time since his 2022 conviction for rape and sexual assault. According to his representative, Juda Engelmayer, the 72-year-old’s condition is “rapidly deteriorating” due to a combination of prison conditions, untreated medical issues, and a lack of proper care.
Weinstein’s Rapid Weight Gain and Dangerous Tongue Inflammation
Speaking to TMZ, Engelmayer detailed a series of troubling health developments. Weinstein has allegedly gained over 25 pounds since being transferred back from Bellevue Hospital a few months ago — 19 pounds in just the last month. The weight gain is said to pose a serious risk to his pre-existing diabetes and heart condition.
Compounding the issue is a severe tongue inflammation, which has reportedly made it difficult for Weinstein to eat or swallow — creating fears that he could potentially choke to death if the issue is not promptly treated.
As of now, Weinstein has been moved back to Bellevue to receive treatment for the infection in his mouth. His team says this emergency transfer underscores the seriousness of his condition.
Missed Medications and Neglect Allegations
Weinstein’s rep also claims there are systemic issues contributing to his decline. According to Engelmayer, the producer is suffering from:
- Missed and delayed medications
- Unaddressed chest palpitations
- Mobility issues that are not being accommodated
“These are life-threatening medical problems that have gone unresolved for far too long,” Engelmayer said. “This is not just poor treatment — it’s a medical crisis.”
Harsh Conditions at Rikers Taking a Toll
In addition to his medical issues, Weinstein is allegedly suffering due to the harsh environment at Rikers Island. Reports claim the prison has:
- Freezing temperatures
- Insufficient clothing
- Poor nutrition
- Lack of hygiene
Engelmayer insists these inhumane conditions are exacerbating Weinstein’s ailments and making it impossible for him to recover or even maintain baseline health.
A History of Health Struggles Behind Bars
Weinstein has faced numerous health scares since being incarcerated. Over the past year, he has reportedly:
- Suffered double pneumonia
- Been diagnosed with leukemia
- Undergone heart surgery
His frequent hospital visits and ongoing treatments have drawn both scrutiny and skepticism, but his legal team insists the health issues are real and worsening.
Weinstein Still Fighting for Retrial, Maintains Innocence
Despite his condition, Weinstein remains vocal. He continues to protest his innocence and is pushing for a retrial, following the overturning of his New York conviction in a state appeals court earlier this year.
Back in January, Weinstein pleaded with the court, saying, “I want to be out of this hellhole … I want this to be over with.” He’s currently awaiting a decision on when that retrial will begin.
Controversial Comparisons and Media Criticism
Recently, Weinstein compared his situation to that of actor Justin Baldoni, who is embroiled in a legal battle with actress Blake Lively. Weinstein accused The New York Times of selectively reporting in both cases, claiming the publication was pushing a “one-sided narrative.”
DOC Yet to Respond
TMZ reports that it has reached out to the New York City Department of Corrections for comment on Weinstein’s health and the conditions at Rikers, but has yet to receive a response.
