JAY-Z is facing growing criticism after students at his Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment accused the program of failing to honor its promise of a debt-free education. Launched in 2021 at Long Island University’s Brooklyn campus, the school was designed to offer aspiring artists and professionals an opportunity to learn without the financial burden that often accompanies higher education. However, a report from Gothamist has uncovered troubling stories from students who say they were blindsided by unexpected bills despite receiving scholarship letters that assured them they would graduate without debt.
The school introduced the “Hope Scholarship” specifically for students with significant financial need, which was supposed to cover all expenses related to tuition, fees, and housing. Justice Stephenson, one of the program’s first recipients, recounted how she was told she owed $26,000 after believing her entire education would be paid for. “I was offered a debt-free education,” she said, noting that after providing documentation to support her case, she was able to reduce her debt to $5,000.
Other students have shared similar grievances, claiming that they were under the impression that their entire financial responsibility—tuition, fees, and housing—would be covered. However, they soon discovered that the scholarship only applied to tuition, leaving them with significant unexpected costs. According to Jackie Nealon, Long Island University’s head of marketing, “Hope Scholarship recipients receive an offer letter that outlines the full-tuition scholarship and any student obligations. The offer letter also expressly includes that neither university fees nor housing costs are included in the scholarship.” Despite this explanation, many students have contested the clarity of their letters, insisting that they were led to believe all of their costs would be covered and would leave them debt-free.
Beyond the financial confusion, students have also expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of the program. They were promised exclusive guest lectures from major Roc Nation stars such as Rihanna and DJ Khaled, yet many reported that these high-profile appearances never materialized. Additionally, students have criticized the school’s facilities, resources, and overall program structure, raising questions about whether the promises made at the school’s inception are being fulfilled.
The controversy surrounding the Roc Nation School of Music mirrors the issues faced by Kanye West’s Donda Academy, which also faced legal battles and public backlash before shutting down in 2022. Donda Academy was similarly criticized for its operational challenges and lack of transparency with students and parents, and it is now embroiled in several lawsuits.
As of now, neither JAY-Z nor Roc Nation have publicly addressed the backlash or provided clarity on the financial and academic concerns raised by students. The controversy continues to cast a shadow over the Roc Nation School’s reputation, and many are left wondering whether the institution will be able to rebuild trust with its student body moving forward.
