Former MLB MVP Jimmy Rollins is weighing in on the growing debate over batter safety following David Fry’s scary fastball accident on Tuesday. Fry was struck in the face by a 99.6 MPH pitch during the Cleveland Guardians vs. Detroit Tigers game, resulting in a trip to the hospital with facial and nasal fractures.
Despite the frightening scene, Rollins told TMZ Sports at LAX on Wednesday that he does not believe sweeping helmet changes or mandatory facemasks are the answer.
“That’s a personal thing,” Rollins said. “As a hitter, [a face guard] may be distracting. And you don’t want something to distract you. Because at the end of the day, stats count. You’ve got to be up there, get up there and hit.”
Rollins Shares Personal Empathy
The 2008 World Series champion noted he has firsthand experience with dangerous pitches.
“I know today he’s probably not doing good,” Rollins said, recalling a time he was drilled in the head area by Cliff Lee.
Rollins, who wore a standard ear flap-style helmet during his career, emphasized empathy for Fry while maintaining that the game’s tradition and focus shouldn’t be compromised.

Fry’s Condition and Recovery
Guardians manager Stephen Vogt confirmed Fry is in good spirits following his hospitalization. While the former All-Star will be sidelined for at least six weeks, he is expected to make a full recovery.
The incident has reignited conversations in baseball circles about player safety, but Rollins and other veterans argue that helmet mandates with face guards could interfere with performance and focus at the plate.
MLB Safety Debate Continues
While David Fry’s accident was undeniably alarming, voices like Jimmy Rollins’ show that the MLB community remains divided on how to address in-game safety without altering the core dynamics of batting. For now, it seems personal choice remains key, leaving fans and players alike debating the balance between protection and performance.
