Fox Sports broadcaster Joy Taylor is speaking out in support of Molly Qerim after the surprise departure of the ESPN First Take host last month. During an October 3 interview on The Bootleg Kev Podcast, Taylor called Qerim “one of the best in the business,” praising her poise, professionalism, and skill as a moderator on the high-pressure morning debate show.
While Taylor admitted she had no insight into why Qerim left, she was full of admiration for her former colleague.
“I love Molly, she’s great,” Taylor said. “She’s done such a great job on that show. Having done that job myself, I know it’s not easy. It requires a lot of emotional intelligence, on top of being a great broadcaster.”
Moderating a Debate Show Isn’t Easy
Bootleg Kev suggested the possibility of a joint podcast featuring Taylor and Qerim, calling it “the best of both networks coming together.” Taylor, however, steered the conversation toward respect for Qerim’s role and the unique demands of moderating a debate show.
Reflecting on her experience hosting Undisputed alongside Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe, Taylor explained that Qerim’s job requires precision, timing, and control, particularly when debates get heated.
“People don’t realize how hard it is to moderate,” Taylor said. “You have to know how to go to break, how to properly interrupt people, and how to keep the show moving when emotions get high. Molly’s so good at that — she’s invaluable to how that works.”
Taylor’s comments highlight how much skill and finesse Qerim brought to ESPN, balancing strong personalities while keeping the broadcast smooth and engaging.
Qerim’s ESPN Legacy
Qerim, who joined First Take in 2015, became a familiar face in some of ESPN’s most heated on-air moments, moderating debates between Stephen A. Smith and a rotating lineup of co-hosts. Her sudden exit left many in the sports media industry surprised, and Qerim has not publicly explained her decision.
Taylor said she’s curious to see who ESPN will tap as Qerim’s replacement, but she expressed full confidence in her friend’s next steps.
“Whatever she does next, she’s going to do a great job,” Taylor said.
Mutual Respect Among Sports Media Powerhouses
Taylor’s praise underscores the mutual respect between two of sports broadcasting’s most influential women, both of whom have helped shape the modern debate format on rival networks. Their experiences illustrate the skill and resilience required to host live, high-stakes shows while maintaining professionalism and credibility.
Fans and Industry React
Industry insiders and fans alike have taken note of Taylor’s remarks, applauding both women for pioneering the space for women in sports broadcasting. Social media has lit up with discussions about Qerim’s next move, and many are eager to see whether she will return to on-air roles or explore new ventures outside ESPN.
