In recent weeks, singer Lil Pazo has publicly criticized supporters of the Bobi Wine-led National Unity Platform (NUP) after facing backlash for performing at an NRM gig organized by Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo.
Strained Relations with NUP
During an interview on the Kasuku Live YouTube channel, the Enkudi hitmaker revealed that his relationship with NUP has been strained since November 2023, when he was denied a chance to attend the grand opening of the NUP office headquarters in Makerere, Kavule.
Lil Pazo expressed disappointment that several artists, including Fik Fameica and Spice Diana, received invitations to the official opening ceremony, while he was completely ignored. This exclusion has since made him feel alienated from the opposition pressure group.
“Nothing hurt me worse than at the official opening of the NUP headquarters. They brought invitations for other artists to my salon. Spice Diana and Fik Fameica were invited but I wasn’t. They didn’t give me a simple invitation card despite all the efforts I had made in their favor.”
Questioning NUP’s Priorities
Lil Pazo further questioned the criteria used to select invited artists, arguing that some, like Fik Fameica, had never made any significant contributions to NUP. Despite his long-time public support for the party, he felt overlooked and unappreciated.
His disappointment escalated when NUP supporters criticized him for his involvement in an NRM-sponsored event, with some branding him a traitor. However, Lil Pazo maintains that his decision was driven by his personal experiences with NUP’s treatment of him.
Moving Forward
The singer has yet to clarify whether he will completely distance himself from NUP or remain politically neutral going forward. For now, his grievances highlight the ongoing tensions within Uganda’s entertainment and political spheres, as musicians often find themselves caught in the middle of political affiliations and public scrutiny.
