Matt Petgrave, the ice hockey player arrested in connection with the tragic on-ice death of former NHL star Adam Johnson, will not face criminal prosecution, British officials confirmed this week.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) issued a statement Tuesday following an extensive police investigation, concluding that there is no realistic prospect of conviction for any criminal offense. As a result, Petgrave will not be prosecuted.
“Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Adam Johnson,” the CPS added.
The Tragic Incident
The heartbreaking incident occurred in October 2023, during a game involving the Nottingham Panthers, Johnson’s team at the time. While skating up the ice, the 29-year-old took a skate blade to the neck, resulting in fatal injuries. Despite immediate medical attention, Johnson succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
The incident shocked the hockey world and was widely described as a “freak accident.”
“Everyone at the club including players, staff, management and ownership are heartbroken at the news of Adam’s passing,” the Nottingham Panthers said in a heartfelt statement.
Petgrave Cooperated Fully During Investigation
Although Petgrave was never publicly named by police during the investigation, it was widely reported that he was the player involved in the collision. He remained in the UK throughout the legal process and had his bail extended eight times as authorities gathered evidence.
The CPS’s decision to drop the case puts an end to months of uncertainty for the player, while the Johnson family continues to mourn their loss.
Adam Johnson’s Legacy
Before moving overseas, Adam Johnson played for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL during the 2018 and 2019 seasons, scoring one goal and tallying three assists in 13 games.
“Adam will always be a part of the Penguins family. It was our honor to watch him fulfill his dream of playing in the National Hockey League,” the Penguins said after his death.
The hockey world continues to honor Johnson’s legacy with tributes, memorials, and moments of silence across leagues.
Rest in Peace, Adam Johnson. Your passion, talent, and legacy live on.
