Montell Jordan Shares Heartbreaking Cancer Update
Montell Jordan, the R&B legend who gave the world the timeless party anthem “This Is How We Do It”, is facing one of the toughest battles of his life.
On Wednesday (Sept. 3), the 55-year-old singer revealed on NBC’s Today show that his prostate cancer has returned — less than two years after his initial diagnosis.
“I always imagined I would be telling my prostate cancer story from the other side of prostate cancer because I had a radical prostatectomy surgery,” Jordan explained. “My prostate was removed. There were clear margins.”
But despite the surgery, doctors recently detected cancerous cells again — and this time, it has spread.
From Celebration to Setback
Montell first went public with his cancer fight in 2024, and after a radical prostatectomy, he celebrated being “cancer free.” He even told fans he hoped his journey would inspire others to get tested early.
But in this new update, Montell shared that the relief didn’t last long. “Close to a year post-prostatectomy, I still need to go back and have additional treatments because it’s [been] detected that there is still cancer,” he admitted.
Facing a New Round of Treatment
To fight back, Montell is now preparing for an intensive seven-and-a-half-week targeted radiation program.
The treatment will:
- Focus on his lymph nodes where cancer has spread.
- Be paired with hormone-blocking medication to slow the cancer’s growth.
“It is a seven-and-a-half week interruption of life to make sure that I have a longer life,” Jordan said, determined to stay strong for his family, fans, and himself.

Turning Pain Into Purpose
Rather than retreat from the spotlight, Montell is using his platform to raise awareness. He announced he’s teaming up with Zero Prostate Cancer, a nonprofit organization, to produce a documentary chronicling his journey.
The film, expected in 2026, will shine a light on what it means to be a “two-time cancer survivor” and serve as a resource for men navigating similar diagnoses.
“I’m trying to give a template for people that get diagnosed with this to … know they have options available to them,” he said.
Montell also got candid about the emotional toll:
“It’s okay to cry…It’s okay to shake your fist at God…It’s okay to navigate and do what you need to do, but doing nothing is not an option.”
A Message of Resilience
Montell Jordan’s story is a reminder that even those who’ve given us joy through music are not immune to life’s hardest battles. But true to his legacy, he’s facing it with courage, honesty, and a willingness to help others along the way.
As he embarks on this next phase of treatment, fans everywhere are rallying behind him with messages of love, support, and prayers.
