The Ugandan music scene has witnessed incredible growth over the years, with artists across various genres—from Kadongo Kamu to Afrobeat—shaping the rich tapestry of Ugandan music. Among these genres, dancehall has held a significant place, and many talented artists have emerged, contributing to the evolution of this genre within Uganda.

Recently, Ugandan dancehall artist Nutty Neithan made a memorable appearance on the Baboon Forest Podcast, where he was asked to name his top five all-time best Ugandan dancehall artists. Neithan, a prominent figure in Uganda’s dancehall scene, surprised many by excluding himself from the list, choosing instead to honor those he believes have truly shaped the dancehall genre in the country.

  1. Peter Miles
  2. Kid Fox
  3. Vampino
  4. Rabadaba
  5. Toolman Kibalama

When asked about the absence of well-known names like Sizzaman, Weasel, Ziza Bafana, and the late AK-47, Nutty Neithan explained that his list was focused on the core dancehall artists who, in his opinion, laid the foundation for the genre in Uganda. According to Neithan, these five artists have been instrumental in defining and popularizing dancehall music in the country.

Peter Miles: The Dancehall King

Peter Miles has long been regarded as one of the pioneers of Ugandan dancehall music. His unique style, combined with his unmatched energy and passion, has made him a household name in Uganda. Miles’ influence on the genre cannot be overstated, and it’s no surprise that Nutty Neithan named him as his number one pick.

Kid Fox: The Versatile Dancehall Artist

Coming in at number two on Nutty Neithan’s list is Kid Fox. Known for his versatility and distinctive voice, Kid Fox’s contributions to Ugandan dancehall have earned him a special place in the hearts of music lovers. His ability to blend reggae influences with local rhythms has made him one of the genre’s standout artists.

Vampino: The Dancehall Rockstar

Vampino, another key figure in Uganda’s dancehall movement, holds the third spot on Neithan’s list. Known for his high-energy performances and captivating lyrics, Vampino has played a major role in bringing Ugandan dancehall to the forefront of the African music scene. His unique sound and stage presence have earned him a dedicated fan base.

Rabadaba: A Dancehall Veteran

Rabadaba, a seasoned dancehall artist, takes the fourth spot on Neithan’s list. Rabadaba’s powerful voice and commanding delivery have made him a significant influence in the dancehall scene. Over the years, his music has resonated with both old and new fans, solidifying his place as a Ugandan dancehall icon.

Toolman Kibalama: The Underrated Dancehall Star

Rounding out Neithan’s list is Toolman Kibalama, an artist known for his authentic approach to dancehall music. While perhaps not as widely recognized as some of the others on the list, Toolman’s contributions to the genre have been vital in the development of dancehall music in Uganda.

A Reflection of Dancehall’s Evolution in Uganda

Nutty Neithan’s list serves as a reminder of how far the Ugandan dancehall scene has come. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a mainstream genre, dancehall music in Uganda has been shaped by the hard work, talent, and dedication of these key figures. While there are many other artists who have contributed to the genre, Nutty Neithan’s choices highlight the pioneers and core figures who made Ugandan dancehall what it is today.
