In a heartfelt gesture during a special sitting of Parliament, Speaker Anita Among committed to sponsoring the education of one of the children of the late Kawempe North Member of Parliament, Muhammad Ssegirinya, who passed away on Thursday at Lubaga Hospital in Kampala. This announcement came as fellow legislators paid tribute to the deceased lawmaker, reflecting on his legacy and the void left behind.

The Speaker’s pledge specifically targets Ssegirinya’s daughter, Aliyah Nagirinya. Addressing Parliament on Friday, Ms. Among assured her colleagues that Nagirinya would be enrolled in her schools for both primary and secondary education. “We must come together to support our own. I am taking full responsibility for her education to ensure she has a bright future,” Ms. Among stated.

This act of generosity was in response to a heartfelt plea from Bumali Mpindi, the MP representing persons with disabilities, who urged his fellow legislators to collectively support the late MP’s family. Mr. Mpindi proposed that each MP contribute at least Shs500,000, emphasizing that such contributions could make a significant difference in ensuring the family’s welfare.

Butambala Woman MP, Ms. Aisha Kabanda, echoed these sentiments, taking the initiative further by suggesting the establishment of a sustainable income source for the bereaved family. She proposed that if each Member of Parliament contributed a minimum of Shs300,000, they could collectively raise Shs150 million. This amount could then be used to set up a business venture that would provide the family with long-term financial stability. “We owe it to our colleague to ensure his family is not left vulnerable,” Ms. Kabanda remarked, garnering support from her peers.

The late MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, popularly known as “Mr. Updates,” was celebrated for his activism and unwavering dedication to the people of Kawempe North. His death has not only left a significant gap in the political arena but has also highlighted the need for a robust support system for families of public servants who pass away while in service.

Parliamentarians across the political spectrum praised Ssegirinya for his service, with many describing him as a relentless advocate for the marginalized. His ability to connect with his constituents earned him widespread respect and admiration.

The Speaker’s gesture and the MPs’ discussions underscore the spirit of solidarity within Uganda’s Parliament. These initiatives aim to provide more than temporary relief, focusing instead on long-term solutions to secure the future of Ssegirinya’s family.

In the broader context, this moment serves as a reminder of the importance of collective responsibility among leaders to support one another during times of crisis. The proposed contributions and the Speaker’s pledge have set a precedent for compassion and collaboration in Parliament.

The late MP’s family, particularly Aliyah Nagirinya, stands to benefit significantly from these interventions. Beyond financial support, this assistance symbolizes a commitment to honoring Ssegirinya’s legacy by empowering the next generation.

As the MPs deliberate on the details of their contributions, Ugandans are reminded of the profound impact that unity and shared responsibility can have in ensuring that no family is left behind. With Ms. Among leading the charge, there is hope that these measures will provide both immediate relief and a stable future for the late MP’s family.
