Mahomes Says Travis Kelce Is More Motivated Than Ever Despite Retirement Rumors
If Travis Kelce is planning to retire after the 2025 NFL season, Patrick Mahomes isn’t seeing it.
Speaking at this week’s Kansas City Chiefs OTA sessions, the star quarterback addressed growing speculation that the 35-year-old tight end might be preparing for his “last ride.” But according to Mahomes, Kelce is showing no signs of slowing down.
“If it’s the last ride, you would never know,” Mahomes told reporters Thursday. “The way he’s talking about football, the way he’s working and trying to be even better this year than he was last year… it doesn’t seem like a guy who’s tired of the job.”
Bounce Back Season Loading?
Kelce is coming off a 2024 campaign that, by his standards, was underwhelming — his lowest yardage total since his rookie year and the fewest touchdowns in over a decade, despite being targeted 97 times. Still, Mahomes believes Kelce is more motivated than ever to prove that last season didn’t define him.
“His body feels good. He feels even better than last year,” Mahomes said. “I think he’s motivated to go out there and have an even better year than he had this last.”
Not Done Yet, Even With Taylor Swift by His Side
Rumors of Kelce’s potential retirement were fueled earlier this year, especially after the Chiefs’ Super Bowl loss and his ongoing relationship with pop megastar Taylor Swift. Many speculated the tight end might step away from the game to enjoy a quieter life.
However, Kelce later admitted he couldn’t walk away from the NFL after a disappointing finish — not without giving it one more shot at glory.
What’s Next for Kelce and the Chiefs?
With Mahomes and Kelce locked in for the upcoming season, the Chiefs are once again AFC favorites heading into 2025. And if Kelce truly is entering his final chapter, it sounds like he’s planning to go out on top — not fade into the background.
