Despite facing serious sexual assault charges in the UK and a lawsuit in the U.S., British actor and comedian Russell Brand is moving forward with a public speaking engagement this Saturday at a Florida college.

Brand is set to appear at New College of Florida in Sarasota on April 12 as part of the school’s Socratic Stage Spring 2025 series, where he’ll headline a conversation titled “Thinking without Permission: A Conversation with Russell Brand on Free Speech, Censorship, and Cultural Power.”

College Defends Decision: “Civil Discourse Must Continue”

The college, which has undergone a political transformation under Governor Ron DeSantis’ leadership, reaffirmed its commitment to hosting controversial voices.

In a statement to TMZ, Alexandra Nicole Islas, Director of Public Policy Events, said:

“In a time when public pressure often seeks to silence rather than engage, New College of Florida is reaffirming its role in creating space for open inquiry… This is a reflection of our commitment to civil discourse and the belief that even challenging conversations deserve room in the public square.”

She emphasized that Brand’s appearance is about open dialogue, not a judgment on his legal standing:

“While the justice system independently addresses other matters, our responsibility is to ensure a space where ideas—especially those that invite dialogue such as the topic of cancel culture and free speech—can be explored with respect, critical thought, and intellectual integrity.”

Legal Cloud Over Brand

Brand’s appearance comes just days after London’s Metropolitan Police formally charged him with a series of sexual offenses, including:

  • One count of rape
  • One count of indecent assault
  • One count of oral rape
  • Two counts of sexual assault

The allegations stem from four separate women and date back to incidents between 1999 and 2005. Brand is due to appear in a UK court on May 2.

Civil Case in New York

In addition to the criminal case, Brand is also facing a civil sexual assault lawsuit in New York over alleged misconduct during the filming of the 2011 movie Arthur. Warner Bros. recently announced plans to release behind-the-scenes outtakes from the film, adding more intrigue to the unfolding legal drama.

A Divisive Stage

Brand will share the spring speaker series stage with other high-profile conservative voices, including:

  • Tom Homan, former ICE Director under Trump
  • Alan Dershowitz, attorney and political commentator

The move underscores New College’s shift toward right-wing intellectualism—a transformation spearheaded by Gov. DeSantis, who has turned the liberal arts institution into a conservative stronghold.

Brand Maintains Innocence

In a video posted to his social media, Brand has strongly denied all allegations, insisting:

“I did a lot, but never that… Everything I did was consensual.”

He continues to portray the allegations as part of a larger societal and political attack on free thinkers and dissenters, tying into the theme of his upcoming college appearance.
