If you’re hoping for a sequel to Sinners, don’t hold your breath. Ryan Coogler, the acclaimed filmmaker behind the box office hit, has officially ruled out the possibility of a follow-up.

Speaking with EBONY in April, Coogler made it clear that he’s moving away from franchise filmmaking—for now.

“I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that,” he explained. “I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me.”

A Standalone Vision, Not a Franchise

Coogler emphasized that Sinners was designed to be a complete cinematic experience—not the beginning of a series.

“I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees, and desserts. I wanted all of it there,” he said. “That was always my intention—to make something holistic and finished.”

Despite the film’s remarkable success—earning $350 million globally, according to Variety—Coogler remains firm in his artistic choice not to revisit the story.

About ‘Sinners’: A Tale of Redemption and Darkness

The film stars Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo.

Synopsis:

Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers return to their Mississippi hometown to start over—only to find a greater evil waiting to welcome them back.

The dark, emotionally layered drama resonated with audiences worldwide, propelling it into the top 10 highest-grossing films of the year.

Fan Appreciation: “Eternal Gratitude”

Despite announcing no sequel plans, Coogler didn’t miss the chance to thank his fans.

“Eternal gratitude. My heart is bursting with it,” he shared in a heartfelt message on social media.
“I want to thank each and every one of you who bought a ticket to see Sinners… who stood in the lobby afterward and talked, made a friend, changed your schedule, and shared the experience.”

He added:

“I had the gift of making a film inspired by my family and ancestry, but it was always a film we wanted to make for audiences. We had you in mind every step of the way and felt a deep responsibility to entertain and move you in the way only cinema can.”

The Bigger Picture: Coogler’s Future Projects

After years of working within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and other major franchises, Coogler’s focus seems to have shifted toward intimate, personal storytelling—films that challenge genre expectations and resonate emotionally with viewers.

With Sinners, Coogler delivered a self-contained narrative that’s both powerful and complete. While the door may be closed on a sequel, the film’s impact and legacy are just beginning to unfold.

What’s Next for Ryan Coogler?

Stay tuned as Coogler continues to chart his own path in Hollywood—away from sequels and toward original, thought-provoking storytelling.
