The federal trial of music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs proceeded Tuesday as jurors heard from a clinical psychologist and one of Diddy’s former personal assistants. Diddy, who has pleaded not guilty, faces serious charges including sex trafficking, racketeering, and obstruction of justice.

Expert Testimony on Psychological Effects of Abuse

Dr. Dawn Hughes, a clinical psychologist called by the prosecution, provided critical insight into the psychological trauma often experienced by victims of abusive relationships. With prior experience testifying in high-profile cases such as those involving R. Kelly and NXIVM’s Keith Raniere, Dr. Hughes explained how shame, humiliation, and isolation can trap victims in cycles of abuse.

She highlighted that survivors frequently turn to drugs or alcohol to cope with ongoing trauma, stating, “They experience a tremendous amount of shame, humiliation, degradation.” Her testimony aimed to help the jury understand the mindset and behaviors of alleged victims in the case.

Former Assistant Describes Life Behind the Scenes

Later in the day, George Kaplan, a former personal assistant to Diddy who was granted immunity in exchange for his testimony, took the stand. Kaplan described his varied duties, including cleaning up after the notorious “freak-offs”—wild parties characterized by heavy drug use and sexual activity.

Kaplan recounted finding empty bottles and baby oil in hotel suites and emphasized that protecting Diddy’s public image was a constant priority. “Protecting him and protecting his public image was very important,” Kaplan told the jury, illustrating the intense effort behind maintaining the mogul’s reputation.

Prosecutors Allege Coercion and Abuse

Prosecutors allege that Diddy leveraged his influence, intimidation tactics, and financial power to coerce women into drug-fueled sex acts, often involving other parties. The case names singer and former girlfriend Cassie Ventura, whose previous testimony alleged emotional and physical abuse during their relationship.

While the defense acknowledges some instances of domestic violence, they argue that Ventura consented to the encounters, pointing to messages and emails they say reveal a complicated and consensual relationship.

Next in Court: Kid Cudi’s Anticipated Testimony

The trial is set to continue Wednesday, May 22, with more witnesses expected to testify. Rapper Kid Cudi is anticipated to take the stand to discuss a past incident involving Diddy and his car, potentially shedding more light on the allegations.
