STARZ has officially acquired Magic City: An American Fantasy, a five-part docuseries set to premiere this summer. The series delves into the legendary Atlanta strip club Magic City, a cultural powerhouse that helped shape hip-hop and elevate numerous artists to superstardom.

A Legendary Institution in Atlanta

Since its founding in 1985 by Michael “Mr. Magic” Barney, Magic City has been a defining force in Atlanta’s nightlife, often referred to as the “Black Studio 54.” The club has long been a key player in hip-hop culture, hosting high-profile artists, athletes, and industry moguls. Over the years, stars like 2 Chainz, Nelly, Shaquille O’Neal, Quavo, Killer Mike, and Big Boi have frequented the venue, solidifying its reputation as a kingmaker in the music industry.

According to the press release, Magic City: An American Fantasy “tells the full tale of the storied club’s rise to global prominence and how it became the definitive king-maker in the hip-hop community.”

Executive Producers and STARZ’s Vision

The docuseries is backed by an impressive production team, including Jermaine Dupri, Jami Gertz, and Bayan Joonan as executive producers. Creator and executive producer Cole Brown emphasized the significance of telling Magic City’s story, stating:

“From politicians to artists, to drug kingpins, Magic City has been a home for a broad cross-section of Black Atlanta for decades. Everyone should know the unbelievable story of this institution and the man who founded it, and STARZ is the perfect partner to bring it to the world. We’re thrilled.”

Jami Gertz, who co-owns the Atlanta Hawks with her husband Tony Ressler, also expressed her enthusiasm for the project, recalling how the Barney family welcomed them to the city:

“They reached out to us with open arms and that great Southern hospitality… It’s a tale of tremendous heart and hustle! And a true love letter to our adopted home of Atlanta, Georgia!”

Magic City’s Cultural and Political Influence

Beyond music, Magic City has played a role in politics and social movements. The club was notably the site of Stacey Abrams’ get-out-the-vote campaign announcement in 2020, further highlighting its cultural significance beyond entertainment.

With Magic City: An American Fantasy, STARZ aims to capture the club’s lasting impact on hip-hop, Atlanta’s identity, and Black culture as a whole. Fans of hip-hop history and nightlife culture will not want to miss this highly anticipated docuseries.
