Wyoming Tunnel Pileup Death Toll Rises to Three as Investigation Continues
Authorities in Wyoming confirmed on Sunday that the death toll from a horrific multi-vehicle crash inside an Interstate 80 tunnel has risen to three. The crash, which took place late Friday morning in Green River, involved 26 vehicles, including 16 commercial trucks. The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is continuing to investigate the cause of the accident, with a significant fire following the collision causing severe damage to the tunnel’s structure.
Fatal Crash and Raging Fire
The deadly crash, which occurred in the westbound tunnel of Interstate 80 at milepost 90.2, prompted an immediate response from emergency crews. The pileup ignited a raging fire, which caused the concrete lining inside the tunnel to collapse, complicating rescue efforts. Tragically, the fire delayed life-saving measures, according to Wyoming Highway Patrol officials.
The fire also made it difficult for responders to enter the tunnel and assess the situation. In addition to the confirmed fatalities, several others were seriously injured. While the total number of injuries has not been officially confirmed, reports suggest at least five individuals suffered critical injuries.
Ongoing Investigation and Tunnel Recovery
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation in collaboration with the Wyoming Highway Patrol. Officials have indicated that recovering wreckage inside the tunnel remains a major challenge. The fire caused extensive damage to the tunnel’s interior, though authorities have reported no structural damage to the tunnel itself.
While the tunnel remains closed, WYDOT has announced that part of the eastbound section may reopen to two-way traffic by Wednesday. However, oversized vehicles will need to take alternate routes until the tunnel is fully cleared and repaired.
Governor’s Remarks and Emergency Response
Governor Mark Gordon expressed his condolences, describing the crash as a tragic event for Wyoming. During a press conference, he commended first responders who worked under extreme conditions. “The circumstances were particularly tough, and the fire prevented some of the life-saving efforts,” Gordon said.
The local community in Green River, a town with a population of around 11,000, has been impacted by road closures. Traffic is currently being rerouted through the city as emergency teams continue to clear wreckage and assess potential hazards.
Weather Conditions Contributed to the Crash
Snowy conditions and slick road surfaces were reported in the area on Friday, which may have played a role in the crash. The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook for the region, warning of icy conditions along Interstate 80 and other highways. WYDOT officials said slushy roads may have contributed to the multi-vehicle pileup.
Next Steps and Legal Considerations
Local authorities will be reviewing the incident to determine if any criminal negligence was involved in the crash. Governor Gordon confirmed that state prosecutors would be involved in any legal proceedings related to the accident.
