Tory Lanez Seeks Shield From Megan Thee Stallion Defamation Case

Tory Lanez has filed a motion in federal court seeking to limit or entirely avoid involvement in the high-profile defamation lawsuit Megan Thee Stallion brought against commentator Milagro Gramz. The case, which centers on the 2020 shooting incident that led to Lanez’s criminal conviction, has drawn intense national attention.

Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, argues that being forced to testify or participate in the ongoing case would create an undue burden and potentially prejudice his pending criminal appeal.

Lanez’s Motion for a Protective Order

On September 24, Lanez’s legal team formally filed a motion for a protective order under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 26(c). The filing emphasized his status as a non-party in the case, officially titled Pete v. Cooper (No. 1:24-cv-24228, Southern District of Florida).

“Daystar Peterson (‘Mr. Peterson’), by counsel, respectfully moves for a Protective Order under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 26(c),” the motion stated.

Lanez’s attorneys warned that continued testimony could infringe upon his constitutional rights while impacting the outcome of his criminal appeal. The motion further requested that the court either bar non-party depositions entirely or limit discovery consistent with federal and Ninth Circuit precedent.

    Claims of Unequal Treatment

Lanez’s legal team also pointed out that other individuals named in the case—including DJ Akademiks and Caesar McDowell—did not face the same level of scrutiny during their depositions.

“The differential treatment raises serious concerns about fairness and due process,” the filing argued.

The court will now decide whether Lanez can avoid further involvement or if his participation must continue.

    Expanding Legal Battle

The defamation lawsuit filed by Megan Thee Stallion has widened to involve other prominent figures.

    • DJ Akademiks has been ordered to testify and disclose the source of a leaked DNA report connected to the case.
    • Adin Ross, another online personality, attempted to avoid a deposition but has been largely unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, Lanez’s own legal obligations remain pressing. Last August, a judge ordered him to sit for a second deposition after his first appearance was described as uncooperative and disrespectful toward Megan’s attorneys.

Blurred Lines Between Criminal, Media & Celebrity Culture

This ongoing saga highlights how celebrity, media influence, and the justice system intersect. Lanez’s motion not only raises questions about fairness in legal proceedings but also underscores the challenges that public figures face when navigating lawsuits in the spotlight.

The outcome of his motion could have far-reaching implications for:

    • How non-party celebrities are treated in high-profile defamation suits
    • The balance between media commentary and personal liability
    • The broader cultural conversation around criminal accountability and celebrity influence

    What’s Next

The court’s decision on Lanez’s motion for a protective order will determine whether he must continue participating in Megan Thee Stallion’s defamation case. Fans, legal observers, and media outlets nationwide are watching closely, as the ruling could set precedent for other celebrity-involved civil lawsuits in the future.
