Drake’s Legal Battle with UMG and Spotify Gains Industry Attention

Wiz Khalifa has shared his thoughts on Drake’s ongoing legal battle with Universal Music Group (UMG) and Spotify. The dispute stems from Drake’s allegations that UMG amplified the release of Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us,” which accuses Drake of being a sex offender. Drake claims the track defamed him and that UMG intentionally turned it into a viral sensation.

In a legal petition filed on November 25 in Manhattan, Drake’s Frozen Moments LLC accused UMG of designing and executing a scheme to profit from his reputational harm. The filing alleges that UMG used bots, payola, and other tactics to manipulate streaming platforms and make “Not Like Us” a viral hit. His attorneys argue that the company’s actions violated federal RICO laws and engaged in deceptive business practices under New York state law.

“UMG designed, financed, and executed a plan to turn ‘Not Like Us’ into a viral mega-hit,” the filing states. “This wasn’t a matter of chance or ordinary business practices.”

Wiz Khalifa Applauds Drake’s Strategy

Speaking on Club Shay Shay with Shannon Sharpe, Wiz Khalifa expressed support for Drake’s decision to take the feud to court. “That’s a Drake move,” Khalifa said. “He’s a musician and a businessman. If he’s not winning in the public eye musically, he’s going to find another way to win. It’s smart, in my opinion.”

The feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar has escalated over recent months through diss tracks and public commentary, but Drake’s legal action marks a rare turn for hip-hop rivalries, which typically remain confined to music.

Drake’s Allegations Against UMG

Drake’s legal team accused UMG of orchestrating a targeted campaign to dominate the digital landscape with “Not Like Us.” They argue that UMG used the track to drive streaming revenue and amplify Lamar’s visibility while harming Drake’s reputation. The petition also alleges that UMG engaged in false advertising and misleading business practices, further deepening the stakes of the legal battle.

The Evolution of Hip-Hop Rivalries

Drake’s legal maneuver has drawn commentary from industry insiders and fans alike, with many noting how it reflects the evolving nature of modern hip-hop feuds. As rap battles increasingly intertwine music, business, and legal strategy, the case underscores how high the stakes have become in the digital age.

What’s Next?

With a court hearing date set, the legal battle between Drake and UMG continues to captivate the music world. Wiz Khalifa’s comments reflect a growing acknowledgment of how business acumen plays a critical role in navigating the entertainment industry. As the dispute heads to court, it will likely set a precedent for how future conflicts in hip-hop unfold.
