The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has announced plans to take firm action against international artists who promote explicit content, with deportation as a possible penalty for those who violate the rules.
The move, aimed at protecting Ugandan audiences—especially children—from harmful material, comes as part of a broader effort to tighten regulations in the entertainment industry.
Protecting Cultural Values
Speaking to the press in Kampala on Tuesday, UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo emphasized the importance of safeguarding Uganda’s cultural values and societal integrity.
“I was shocked to learn that an event unfolded over the weekend featuring explicit content. After discussing it with a friend, I realized how disturbing it was. This incident highlights the urgency of having tighter regulations to protect our audiences,” said Mr. Thembo.
The UCC is not only targeting local performers but also cracking down on international artists whose performances or content include vulgarity.
Stronger Measures and Accountability
The Commission has revealed plans to collaborate with intelligence agencies to identify and deport offending artists, while also holding promoters accountable for hosting such events.
“We are committed to protecting our culture and values. Promoting such material violates our laws and erodes the integrity of our society,” Mr. Thembo added.
Streamlined Permit Process
To encourage compliance among content creators, the UCC is introducing a streamlined system that will allow applicants to secure permits for performances and media content within three hours. This initiative aims to support artists and event promoters who align with Uganda’s cultural standards.

The UCC’s warning signals a new era of stricter oversight in Uganda’s entertainment industry. Both local and international artists, as well as event promoters, are urged to ensure that their performances and content adhere to the country’s guidelines to avoid severe repercussions.
