Pharrell Williams has been named a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, adding another prestigious accolade to his illustrious career. In this new role, the globally celebrated artist and entrepreneur will represent UNESCO at major international cultural events and support educational and cultural initiatives worldwide.

    A Voice for Global Impact

Pharrell’s appointment highlights his commitment to fostering creativity and promoting equality. As a mentor and role model, particularly for young creators in Africa, Pharrell’s work aligns closely with UNESCO’s mission to develop cultural industries and build opportunities in underserved regions.

To kick off his new role, Pharrell addressed 800 students, including secondary school and aspiring fashion, music, and film creators, during a special event at UNESCO Headquarters. The gathering included a screening of his animated biopic Piece by Piece, which served as inspiration for the attendees.

    Pharrell’s Statement on the Honor

Expressing gratitude for his appointment, Pharrell said, “Words cannot describe how I feel about being chosen by UNESCO as a Goodwill Ambassador. Thank you to Director-General Audrey Azoulay for this opportunity. It’s an honor to continue our work in evening the odds for children and adults through education with YELLOW and Black Ambition.”

Reflecting on his journey, Pharrell added, “Growing up in Virginia, never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be given an opportunity like this one. I want to deepen that sense of unity and togetherness by doing work that evens the odds for marginalized communities.”

    UNESCO’s Praise for Pharrell

Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO’s Director-General, lauded Pharrell’s influence, stating, “A complete artist, Pharrell Williams is also a humanist. He works to put culture at the service of peace and bringing people together. He believes in the power of creativity and education to build a better future. His commitments resonate with UNESCO’s mandate.”

    A History of Collaboration

Pharrell’s connection with UNESCO runs deep. In June, he held his fourth Louis Vuitton fashion show, The World is Yours, at UNESCO’s Paris Headquarters, underscoring his alignment with the organization’s values.

    About UNESCO and Pharrell’s Role

Established in 1945, UNESCO promotes peace and security through education, science, culture, and communication, with 194 member states and offices in 54 countries. Pharrell joins the ranks of notable Goodwill Ambassadors such as jazz icon Herbie Hancock and K-pop group SEVENTEEN.

With this appointment, Pharrell aims to use his platform to create a global impact, empowering marginalized communities and fostering a culture of inclusion and creativity.
