Veteran Ugandan actress Mariam Bukenya, popularly known as Ketra, has expressed her displeasure after being excluded from The Ebonies’ 47-year celebration event. The milestone event, held last week, marked nearly five decades of the drama group’s impact on Ugandan theatre, but Ketra was notably absent from the cast and the festivities.

    Ketra’s Legacy with The Ebonies

Ketra, who has been a part of The Ebonies for over 20 years, was not invited to participate in the event or recognized for her contributions. During the celebration, several cast members were rewarded with accolades for their roles in elevating Ugandan theatre, leaving Ketra and other key figures feeling overlooked.

Reflecting on the snub, Ketra did not hold back her frustration. “For over two decades, I dedicated my time and talent to The Ebonies, contributing to its growth and success in the drama industry,” she stated.

    Criticism of Event Organizers

Ketra directed her criticism toward the event’s organizers, accusing them of neglecting significant contributors to the drama group’s history. She argued that such omissions undermine the contributions of veteran actors who played pivotal roles in the success of Ugandan theatre.

    Open to New Collaborations

Following the incident, Ketra has made it clear she is ready to explore new opportunities outside of The Ebonies. She encouraged other stakeholders in the Ugandan film and theatre industry to reach out to her directly, signaling her openness to work on diverse projects.

Her statement has sparked discussions within the theatre community about the recognition of artists and their contributions, especially veterans who have shaped the industry over the years.

    The Ebonies’ Legacy

The Ebonies have been a cornerstone of Ugandan theatre for nearly five decades, known for their vibrant performances and significant influence on the industry. However, the recent controversy surrounding Ketra’s exclusion highlights ongoing challenges in honoring all contributors equally.

As Ketra charts a new path, her journey could inspire more collaboration and innovation in the Ugandan film and theatre industry.
