LeBron James Discusses His Remarkable Longevity in the NBA, Plans to Retire as a Laker

LeBron James celebrated his 40th birthday on Monday, December 30, marking a significant milestone in his legendary NBA career. Now in his 22nd season, the Los Angeles Lakers superstar reflected on his enduring success in the league and expressed confidence in his ability to continue playing at a high level for years to come.

Speaking to reporters after the Lakers’ practice, James shared his thoughts on turning 40 while still performing at an elite level in basketball. “I had a decade of the 30s, so to just wake up and just be like, ‘Oh shoot, oh damn, you’re 40?’” he said. “It’s kind of laughable, really, to know where I am, to see where I am still playing the game at a high level, still being such a young man but old in the scheme of how many years I got in this profession.”

    LeBron’s Future in the NBA:
Despite being in the later stages of his career, James believes he has more to offer on the court. When asked about his future, he stated, “To be honest, if I really wanted to, I could probably play this game at a high level probably for about another — it’s weird that I might say this — but probably about another five to seven years. If I wanted to.” However, James also made it clear that he has no intention of playing that long, emphasizing that his decision will be based on what is best for his body and career.

    Historic Milestones and All-Star Play:
James continues to make history on and off the court. This season, he achieved a historic first by becoming the first father-son duo in NBA history to play on the same team when his son, Bronny James, made his debut. James is still playing at an All-Star level, with an impressive 23.5 points per game, 9.0 assists, and 7.9 rebounds so far this season. His performance has solidified his place as one of the league’s top players, even as he enters his 40s.

LeBron’s Dream Ending: Retiring as a Laker:
James also shared his dream of retiring with the Lakers, stating, “That’s the plan. I would love for it to end here. That would be the plan. I came here to play the last stage of my career and to finish it off here.” Despite his hopes to retire as a Laker, James acknowledged the realities of the business side of basketball. “But I’m also not silly … [not] to know the business of basketball. But I think my relationship with this organization speaks for itself. And hopefully, I don’t gotta go nowhere before my career is over,” he added, expressing his strong bond with the team and city.

    Conclusion:
As LeBron James celebrates his 40th birthday and reflects on his incredible NBA career, he remains one of the most dominant players in the league. With plans to retire as a Laker and his continued excellence on the court, James is proving that age is just a number. Fans will continue to follow his journey closely, hoping to see him play for a few more years in Los Angeles before he calls it a career.
